In sci-fi shows and literature, the 'answer' to paper is pretty much the cross between tablets and smartphones, which we are getting pretty close to. In the first section, "What has made the paperless office possible?" it proposes that "Prior to the following innovations, paperless offices were simply nice ideas no one had the means to implement. These developments provided the tools and technology needed to bring the paperless office from the planning page into reality. " It then goes on to say that three tools/technology are: 1. The growth of cloud computing 2. The increased adoption of shared document formats like PDF 3. [...]

When you print something out, are you actually printing a record, or a convenience copy? Perhaps the issue is one of access, not love of a medium. And anecdotal data based on user surveys reflecting the personal use of paper, as Tom noted, do not necessarily translate into actual conclusions reflecting the use of paper as a medium of record. I think Caroline and John are correct: the principle barriers to less paper [...]

It is an unsubstantiated meandering vendor-mercial. Clouds, data formats, and working remotely are not significant drivers for going paperless. They are minor incidental incentives, maybe. The reason paperless workflows and records systems have been resisted is far more a function of limited ROI and cultural resistance. This is true whether or not you are talking records use or storage. Even if they volunteered to expose their survey's methodology and data, I doubt that it would reveal much of anything convincing regarding their claims. [...]

Then came scanning. Then came client/server technology. Now we have the cloud. All of which costs money and budgets are getting smaller not larger. We will truly be paperless when all peoples of the world are technology enabled and the technology has easier to read screens (especially in sunlight), easier to charge (perhaps with solar energy), and costs very little to obtain, use and support. It's gotten a little quiet in the listserv dialog. I hope my "stark realties" message did not squash the discussion of the paperless office issue, because addressing this issue is extremely important now and in the future.
Many people see the difficulties of achieving a paperless office as disheartening. I only see it as further proof of the need for real Records Management and enterprise-perspective Records Managers. Records Managers, Archivists, and Librarians are the only professionals addressing information based primarily on content value. All of these three professions are critical to the future of high [...]

Electronic data storage is an important first step, but the really necessary next step is a direct computer- to-brain interface (of which some progress has already been made - http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/10.09/vision.html). Then we don't need to carry paper OR devices - it's all right there in your head, available with a mere thought at a moment's notice. I think that this technology will be commonplace in 50 years, upon which time I'll be 96. It's sad, because that's the age [...]

I think most enterprises are reducing significantly the volume of paper records being retained as records. The days of hundreds of boxes of greenbar are over. Frankly, if our expense reimbursement group could get a paperless expense submission process figured out, we'd have almost nothing retained in paper form. But I digress... Those of you who read my blog have likely followed my experiences with my iPad. I'm trying more and more to wean myself from toting a laptop everywhere I go. The tablet form factor is [...]

One other thing. Technology systems require a lot of TLC and support. Last summer while traveling, as I put my laptop back into the case at an airport, it slipped very slightly out of my hand while shutting down and slide slowly to the carpet. When I got on the plane and attempted to re-start it said "Hard Disk Not Exist." It was a goner. Dead hard disk. Hmmm... somehow I remember dropping a paper document lightly to a carpet once in a while, but still being able to read it when I picked it up! [...]

I just received a nice project workflow document from a client in Visio format, which displayed nicely in my browser with its Visio viewer plug-in. But I wanted to mark it up and send some comments back. Since I do not have or use Visio software, I had to upload it to the www.zamzar.com free Visio to PDF converter and then download the converted document. Now I can mark it up with Adobe PDF tools. It was tempting to print, pencil markup, scan, and then [...]

I don't think I could ever go back happily to a world before computers and smartphones with all the wealth of information and assistants at my beck and call, but I also know there are times when only paper provides certain, well, affordances that make my work or [...]

I just read an interesting article in Texas Monthly. It's about the disappearing historical records located in Counties throughout Texas.
