On April 21 & 22, our group of four headed for Everglades National Park
primarily to see the birds without taking any hikes into the interior. We knew we
were a little late in the season but still saw a total of 75 different birds,
with the most interesting assortment of small birds found in the vicinity of
the Anhinga Trail and the Hidden Lakes Trail which crosses the Gumbo Limbo
Trail near its entrance.
Our list included Ovenbirds, American Redstarts, Blackpoll Warblers,
Black-and-white Warblers, Black-throated blue Warblers, many Northern Parulas and
Palm Warblers. Also a juvenile Cooper's Hawk and an adult Red shouldered Hawk
right next to the trail. Nearby and at Paurotis Pond & Eco Pond we saw two
different Great White Herons, nesting Anhingas with young, a Shiny Cowbird with many
Brown-headed Cowbirds, a Purple Gallinule,a Gray Kingbird, many great Crested
Flycatchers, (didn't hear a Brown-Crested) and several Swallow-tailed Kites
overhead. We also saw the usual wading birds and herons, gulls, both Brown and
White Pelicans, Wood Storks (still nesting), Roseate Spoonbills, Blue Winged
Teals, multitudes of Coots and Moorhen, and Pied-billed Grebes.
Elsewhere we saw several Common Mynas, White winged Doves and lots of Cave
Swallows.
With the rest of the more common birds bringing us to our total of 75 we
returned home very happy with our two days of birding. We'll try to get there
earlier in the season next time.
