2. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Advising for Summer / Fall:
In preparation for summer / fall registration, please keep the following in mind:
**All students should check ISIS to view any holds** All holds must be removed prior to registering for courses. In most cases, an honors advisor *cannot* remove these holds for you.
All engineering majors must meet with an advisor in engineering (*not honors*) to get your engineering advising hold removed. To view the list of engineering advisors by department, visit http://sites.eng.ufl.edu/students/advising/who-is-my-advisor
Please plan ahead *now* so there won't be any problems once registration begins.
Remember, if you want to meet with an honors advisor, please call 352-392-1519 to set up an appointment. Please do not e-mail advisors directly about making appointments.
You may also stop by our walk-in advising hours in 343 Infirmary to ask *quick* advising questions from 3:00-5:00pm on Mondays - Thursdays.
Advisors' calendars are going to be very full during registration time, so please plan ahead as much as possible if you would like to meet with us.
If you have advising questions about specific courses or major requirements, your major / college advisor or the department offering the course likely will be the best person to answer those questions: http://www.ufadvising.ufl.edu/advisers.aspx
3. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Taking Classes at Another Institution over Summer:
If you are planning to take courses at another institution over the summer, you will need to complete the Transient Student Form, http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/pdf/transient.pdf , or online via Facts.org . All transient work must be approved by a college and/or departmental advisor. Honors advisors cannot approve them.

11. RESEARCH: Reducing a common birth defect with a nutritional supplement (NEW POSTING):
There are no preventative measures that reduce the incidence or severity of hypospadias, a birth defect that feminizes male genitalia occurring in 1 of every 125 boys. We recently discovered that certain vitamin supplements reduce the severity of hypospadias. My research investigates the developmental and molecular mechanisms through which this ameliorative effect occurs and takes an important first step toward development of a maternal nutritional supplement that can buffer the embryo against hypospadias.
I am recruiting one dedicated undergraduate to help with this research. Duties will vary and include seemingly menial but important tasks such as labeling tubes, interesting technical tasks (e.g., fluorescent microscopy), and possibly independent research. Although this position is unpaid you will receive valuable research experience, detailed and personalized letters of recommendation, and potentially authorship on publications all of which are important for your career goals. For more information contact Dr. Krista McCoy at [log in to unmask]
12. RESEARCH: Undergraduate Research Symposium:

Don't miss this opportunity to take a break from your day, stroll through, take a look at the campus-wide research being presented by undergraduates, and offer them your feedback. Come support researchers from the USP, HHMI, McNair, InvestiGators, and other campus programs. For a complete schedule of presentations, go to http://www.scholars.ufl.edu/undergraduate-research-symposium.aspx.

Students enrolled in this course will study Americans' changing views of Paris as reflected in eighteenth-, nineteenth- and twentieth-century American literature and in selected Hollywood films, such as An American in Paris. The objective is to gain increased understanding of American and French culture by studying Franco-American interaction in American literature and film. Through readings, films, and their own writing, students encountering Paris-perhaps for the first time-can compare their responses to the city to those of many generations of Americans who loved Paris. Course requirements include reading The Ambassadors by Henry James, The Sun Also Rises and A Movable Feast by Hemingway, a packet of readings, selections from Americans in Paris; viewing films; participating in class and on field trips; and keeping a journal and writing a five-page research paper. Field trips include Versailles, where Franklin, Jefferson, and Adams met the French court; walking tours, following routes described by Hemingway; cafés and restaurants favored by "The Lost Generation," such as the Closerie des Lilas and La Coupole; 27 Rue de Fleurus, where Gertrude Stein held literary salons; the Louvre and other museums; and Montmartre.
Program Fee: Includes 13 nights in hotel, breakfast daily, 6 group meals, 3 UF GPA credits, cultural activities that are part of the program, excursions, bus and metro transport passes for stay in Paris. The fee for 2011 is $2650.
