HONORS ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Volunteers Needed for Involvement Panels (NEW
POSTING):
We're looking for volunteers to serve as panelists for Introduction to
Honors Professional Development classes this fall (formerly known as
Honors FYF). If you have completed an interesting internship, research
project, or study abroad program or have participated extensively with
campus leadership and would be willing to share your experiences with
first-year honors students, we want to hear from you! 

Our panelists have been very successful in helping students find out
about new opportunities, and we're looking forward to continuing the
panels this year. Panelists don't have to prepare anything for the
classes - they simply need to show up and share their experiences!

Please visit http://www.honors.ufl.edu/webforms/fyfvolunteer/ to submit
your contact information and provide a brief description of your
involvement. Instructors will contact you as each opportunity approaches
to see if you're available to speak.

2.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Drop/Add (TODAY):
ISIS Registration, www.isis.ufl.edu , will be available starting August
23. You will have a registration appointment for schedule adjustment
based on the number of credits you are bringing in. You can find your
appointment time on ISIS. 

The following times are open registration - you do not need to wait
until your appointment to adjust your schedule during these times:
August 28: 8:00am-3:00am.
August 29: 8:00am-11:59pm.

You can drop courses at any time.

*Advisors cannot bypass your appointment time to add you to a class
early.* 

Your schedule must be finalized by 11:59pm on August 29. 

3.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Advising during Drop/Add (TODAY):
Honors advisors will be available for schedule help throughout the first
week of classes. Feel free to visit an advisor to discuss what classes
to enroll in for the fall semester. 

*Advisors cannot add students to classes that are full.* 

The Honors Office will not be making any advising appointments through
drop/add, so please utilize the walk-in advising hours below.

Advisors will have walk-in hours in the offices next to the Hume
classrooms during drop/add week during the following times:
Wednesday from 2:00-3:00pm and 4:00-4:45pm.

Walk-in advising also will be available during the day from
9:00am-12:00pm and 1:00-4:30pm in the Honors Office in 29 Tigert.

*Please note that walk-in advising will be very limited on Tuesday
afternoon, as most advisors will not be available during that time
today.*

Walk-in advising meetings typically run for 5-10 minutes and are,
therefore, most useful for quick questions about registration. They are
not recommended if you need a lengthy review of requirements or want to
discuss long-term planning or undergraduate opportunities. Please call
the Honors Office at 392-1519 if you would like to make an appointment
with an advisor to discuss those items after the drop/add period.

4.	ADVISING ANNOUNCEMENT: SAT II Placement for Foreign Languages:
If you need to take the SAT II for placement into a foreign language
class, please visit http://www.at.ufl.edu/testing/placementtesting.php
for information regarding testing registration and dates.

5.	HONORS COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT: Seats Available in Many Courses (NEW
POSTING):
There are still seats available in many honors courses this semester.
Please take a look on ISIS to see if something might fit your schedule.
Course descriptions are available online at
http://www.honors.ufl.edu/courses/coursesfall07.html . Students are
allowed to take more than one honors course per semester.

6.	HONORS COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT: Intro to Honors Professional
Development (NEW POSTING):
There are still a few seats in most sections of IDH 4905: Introduction
to Honors Professional Development. If you are a first-year student
interested in learning more about internships, research, study abroad,
and other opportunities on campus, you may enjoy taking this one-credit
honors course. Please contact Melissa Johnson at [log in to unmask]
with your UFID number and the section you would like. Times available
are: M8, T4, T8, W8, R4, and R7.



SHO ANNOUNCEMENTS

7.	LEADERSHIP: SHO Committee Applications:
The Student Honors Organization (SHO) not only serves all on and
off-campus Honors students, but it is also the area government for Hume
Hall. SHO is one of the most active groups on campus, and being a
Committee member is an incredible experience! Each fall the SHO Officers
select twenty-six Honors students and/or Hume residents to staff the
four Committees: Academic, Social, Community Service, and Residential.
Each committee member serves a two-semester term, fall and spring. 

Committees plan and organize many events throughout the year. Committee
members must attend weekly meetings, and they are expected to attend as
many Student Honors Organization events as possible. 

Any UF Honors student or resident of Hume Hall may apply for a position
on the SHO Committees. There are no specific qualifications, but
creativity, a cooperative spirit, and experience in event planning are
useful. All Honors students are strongly encouraged to apply, but
applicants should remember that the selection process is competitive. 

You must be able to attend weekly meetings on Tuesday evenings. You must
be available for a mandatory retreat during the September 7-8 weekend
(you will be back before the football game begins). Members of the
Residential Committee must live in Hume Hall.

EVENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES

8.	JOB OPPORTUNITY: Part-Time Job Fair (TODAY):
The Career Resource Center & Student Financial Affairs will host the
first Part-Time Job Fair this fall. This event is free and open to all
UF students. University departments and local employers will be in
attendance to recruit students for their part-time and seasonal hiring
needs. Students should bring their resumes and class schedules to this
event. Work study and non-work study students are encouraged to attend.

The Part-Time Job Fair takes place on Tuesday, August 28 from
10:00am-2:00pm on the Reitz Union Colonnade and North Lawn. For more

9.	JOB OPPORTUNITY: Tutor At-Risk Children:
Students needed to be one-on-one tutors for at-risk children through an
Alachua County funded program. Tutors will be paid $9.50/hour. Work

10.	INTERNSHIP: CLAS News and Publications (NEW POSTING):
CLAS News & Publications graphics and web interns wanted! 

Graphics: Build your portfolio, stretch your design muscles, work on
real-life projects! You'll get to photograph campus events and produce
brochures, posters, postcards, and fliers. Applicants must have strong
typography and production skills and be very deadline driven.
Familiarity with Adobe CS2 is preferred, but if your design portfolio is
strong enough, we will train you on our software. Contact: Jane

Web: Gain experience in a variety of computer design applications and
build your portfolio! Here's your chance to develop web sites, graphics,
online forms, and Flash animations. Applicants should be proficient in
HTML and CSS. Familiarity with Dreamweaver is preferred, but we will

These are unpaid internships, but the hours are flexible and we are
supportive of those seeking academic credit. Please submit a cover

11.	INTERNSHIP: Performing Arts Center at P.K. Yonge (NEW POSTING):
Looking for a unique internship opportunity? The Performing Arts Center
at P.K. Yonge is currently looking for creative and dedicated students
to join their student marketing team. This new team will be helping to
create and implement a marketing plan to increase community and campus
awareness of this professional facility located at UF. This is not just
a great internship but a chance to build your resume. 

All majors are welcome to apply; students with an interest or major in
marketing, advertising, communications, business, theater and fine arts

12.	SERVICE: Soar Mentoring Project:
The Soar project allows for student to give back to the community while
impacting the lives of young children in the Gainesville community. For
the 2007-2008 academic year, mentors will influence the lives of
children at Howard Bishop Middle School. If you are interested in

13.	SERVICE: UF Relay for Life Volunteers Needed:
UF Colleges Against Cancer is looking for volunteers for the 2008 UF
Relay for Life taking place March 28-29. We are also looking for groups
to form teams to participate in the event. For more information, please

14.	LEADERSHIP: Get Carded Volunteers and Officers Needed:
Are you looking for a fun and growing student organization to join? Are
you looking to help out for a great cause? If so, Get Carded is looking
for you! 
 
We are a student organization on campus dedicated to saving lives by
educating about the importance of organ donation, and encouraging
students to sign a donor card. We are a laid-back group and hold a few
events every semester to try and reach out to students on campus about
organ donation.
 
We are currently looking for volunteers and officers for our Fall '07
Get Carded campaign! If you are looking to get involved on campus, this
is the perfect opportunity as we have many positions that need to be
filled.

15.	EVENT: Moveon.org Community Vigil (NEW POSTING, TODAY):
There will be a community vigil this evening, August 28 from 6:00-8:00pm
at the Downtown Community Plaza (12 Southeast 1st Street) to discuss the
war in Iraq. The vigil features an open microphone, guest speakers,
brochures and exhibits on the cost of war, refreshments, opportunities
for groups to "table" for free and more. The event will be recorded for
posting on YOUTUBE. 

16.	EVENT: Warrington College of Business Bash (NEW POSTING):
It's that time of year again...the Business Bash is here! On Thursday,
August 30, from 5:00-7:00pm in the Emerson Hall courtyard (across
University Ave from the stadium), more than 20 business organizations,
the MAIB program, Study Abroad services, and your Warrington advisors
will be gathered to help you make the most out of your UF experience.  

The Business Bash is a great opportunity to network with other business
students and meet members of business clubs on campus. All students are
welcome, and remember: it's never too early or too late to get involved!

17.	EVENT: Engineers Without Borders Meeting (NEW POSTING):
Engineers Without Borders will have their first meeting of the semester
this Thursday, August 30 at 6:30pm in NEB 386. All majors are welcome

18.	EVENT: Museum Nights Fall Semester Kick-off (NEW POSTING):
Join us for Museum Nights located in the Cultural Plaza on Thursday,
August 30 from 5:00-9:00pm. Learn about the realities of shark life from
the University of Florida's own expert researcher George Burgess!
Burgess will be discussing his own experiences and research as the
Director of the International Shark Attack File and the Florida Program
for shark attack Research, accompanied by the musical talent of The
Sunshine Steelers, tropical hors d'oeuvre, and a special showing of
"Jaws" at 6:00pm all for free!
