The typical cycle period is about four weeks. There are some dependencies around the type of backups being performed and the anticipated reliability of the backup process.
Most organizations will do a weekly full backup, with daily incremental backups. A four week cycle will generally mean that you have 3-4 full sets offsite at any given time.
When you design the plan, please make an effort to also build into the plan a restoration test from time to time. Most organizations seldom test the restores and have no idea how long the restore will take or if the restores even work.
In addition, write a policy statement that mandates that the backups exist solely for backup purposes and are not to be used because some big shot fat-fingered the delete key. That will protect you (somewhat) from having to regularly stop your backup process due to litigation (it's not absolute, but does provide some limited insulation).
