Michael, all,

I work in Lakeland near Lake Hollingsworth and have been checking the lake
almost daily on my lunch hour for the last few months. I have had some
pretty good birds for the area, nothing rare Florida wise, but good birding
none the less. Probably the best bird this season was a Sanderling back in
September. The lake is being dredged and drawn down so the shorebird habitat
has been very good. In addition to the Spoonbills that have been there for
3 months off and on, there are three Royal Terns, 2 Black-bellied Plovers, 1
Western Sandpiper, several Least Sands, a couple of Dunlin, about 100 Stilt
Sands, approximately 200 Long billed Dowitchers, 10 or so Herring Gulls, 10
+/- Caspian Terns and about 20 Black Skimmers.

I birded Lake Hollingsworth this Friday and had 5 White Pelicans. The high
count for me this fall for White Pelicans was in October with 200, so your
count of 645 is spectacular. I have also seen a couple of wing tagged
pelicans and the birds, I have learned, are coming from Minnesota. My high
count for Woodstorks was 180. In September, my total species count for one
hour at the lake topped out at 65 species.

Take care

Kurt Radamaker

Just 15 minutes ago (4:15 PM Dec 9 ) I saw a spectacular sight of 645
white pelicans fishing along the shore of Lake Hollingsworth as well as
15 roseate spoonbills (probably the same group as reported seen around
Lake Parker ) 25 wood storks and one beautiful mature bald eagle standing
on the shore watching the action. Lake Hollingsworth is a small lake in
the middle of Lakeland. It is surrounded by a 3 mile paved walking path.
Part of the shoreline is the campus of Florida Southern College with its
many buildings designed by Frank Loyed Wright. For those of you who would
like to combine bird watching with a beautiful walk then this is the
place.
