Ed Kwater led a group of 11 to Honeymoon Island today to age and ID
shorebirds.

As I write this email, there are upwards of 2500 terns on the north end of
Honeymoon Island, maybe half are Common and Black Terns; another quarter are
Forster's. The flocks include Sandwich, Caspian and Royal Terns. Saw a
first-year Least Tern on the Dunedin Causeway. A 7-tern day! I personally
have never seen this many terns in one place at one time.

Also seen:
dozens of Marbled Godwits resting and foraging in the grass
6+ Whimbrel - in the grass with the Godwits
Snowy, Piping, Wilson's, Semipal and Black-b Plovers in abundance
Least, Semipalmated (juvenile) and Western Sandpipers
Red Knots (also a flock on the causeway)
Black Skimmers in with the terns
Lesser Yellowlegs (juvenile) on the causeway
Greater Yellowlegs at the marsh south of the dog-wash area
Spotted Sandpiper on the causeway
Short-b Dowitchers
Sanderlings
Willets (western race)
Reddish Egrets on causeway and north end of Honeymoon
