Peter,
Where I work, they never had a records manager. I provided them with all the
information you requested. I guess I need to try to determine ways to
educate them on the importance of this position.

Subject: Salary surveys
Well I've used the ARMA 1998 salary survey and it is not very useful. Why?
you ask well the number of respondents was low and fragmented. Some
categories had less than 20 respondents and a very high salary can skew the
results. IF and that is a big one IF ARMA were to conduct another survey
they should supply job descriptions for respondents ie pick the following
job description that most accurately describes your present work. Far too
many folks in our profession carry the title of records manager and yet
their duties are in reality that of a file room supervisor or a departmental
coordinator. No offense meant nor intended but it is reality.
The survey should also ask about education (BA, MS, PHd), years in the
profession, starting salary at current position, current salary, benefits
(hard and soft), geographical location, certifications, etc.
Ray Cunningham's survey conducted on both recmgmt-l and the archivist
listservs was IMHO a more valid survey. I would hope that Ray could do it
again OR ARMA could even use zoomerang to quickly collect and post the data
at a very low cost. <hint, hint>
just my thoughts on a rainy p.m.
