It might be worth considering additional certifications. Not everyone in records management aspires to be records managers and not all records managers are fluent in all aspects of records management despite having the CRM certification. Some specialists in the field might be a good idea. Perhaps even a step process where a couple of exams passed earns Certified Records Analyst and from there additional testing is available to pursue specialist fields in records management or a CRM for overall that should concentrate a little heavier on project management, personnel supervision and the like. A little thinking outside the box might be just what this profession needs. Surely there are loads of pros and cons to consider and study. Certifications should be well defined and fit current and future needs of the profession. I don't think it's an idea to be shot down too quickly; when I compare it to the certifications in the health and medical field it raises all sorts of possibilities. I am not suggesting diluting but rather expanding and opening the profession; raising the bar and visibility. Oh how I long for the day when records management is a visible profession and people's faces don't go all wrinkly with confusion when I tell them the profession I am in.

This is a bit of a broad statement considering that Part 5 of the CRM exams
is all technology and includes a strong element of questions regarding
electronic records issues.  The profession has advocated for years that the
basic tenets of records management applies to all formats and media - not
just paper or microfilm.  I suggest that, rather than diluting the CRM with
extraneous certificates and certifications, we need to evaluate how best the
CRM testing structure can reflect an expanded body of knowledge.
