Dear UF Grad Students,
We would like to announce an opportunity for graduate students to study one
semester study abroad in Brazil at either the Federal University of Vicosa
in Vicosa, Minas Gerais or the Federal University of Bahia in Salvador/Cruz
das Almas, Bahia. The Department of Education is funding a program for
undergraduates at UF in the study of Natural Resource Management in Tropical
and Temperate Ecosystems with emphasis on Forests and Wetlands. However, due
to the initial low enrollment of undergradutes in the program, we are
creating 2 openings for Graduate Students who wish to participate in the
program. The openings are for the semester in Brazil that runs from March to
June, 2004. While the emphasis is on Forestry and Wetlands, the program will
be open to anyone interested in the broader topic of Natural Resource
Management. The pertinent details follow:
1. All classes will be in Portuguese, therefore fluency in Spanish or
proficiency in Portuguese are required.
2. Of the 9 hours that will make up a full time student, 3 hours must be in
a class that is oriented toward the Brazilian culture, such as continued
study of Portuguese, Brazilian history, etc. The other six hours will be
made up of courses related to natural resource management and may include
independent study with a professor at the Brazilian university.
3. The successful applicants will receive a grant of $2,000 in support of
airfare and living expenses.
4. This is a tuition exchange program, so the student will matriculate at
UF as normal and will not pay tuition at the Brazilian universities.
5. The program is open to all UF graduate students but seems particularly
appropropriate for students in TCD, Forestry, Environmental Sciences,
Geology, Soil and Water Science and Geography.
6. The program is open to U.S. citizens and legal residents.
Due to the March, 2004 commencement of classes in Brasil, the deadline for
application is October 31, 2003. We apologize for the short notification but
it is unavoidable. The two successful candidates will be notified by the end
of the first week of November and will be required to start the paperwork
necessary for international travel.
To apply send a letter to Dr. Comerford at the address or email below that
1) gives the particulars of your degree program (level, department, thesis
topic, etc.), 2) notes our current GPA, 3) explains your interest in this
program and 4)indicates what you would like to study in Brazil. In the
letter please give your current GPA and have it signed by you and your major
professor to show his/her support of your intention to study in Brazil.
This is an interesting opportunity that is open only for this short time.
If you want more details or want to talk about the program please contact
