Moses Creek Conservation Area (St. Johns Water Management) is located off of
US1 South on State Road 206. It has two parking areas.
Sunday morning, Jeff Bledsoe and I birded from the eastern-most (the second
area on the left as you drive east) parking area off of SR 206. If you go
there, be sure to look over the maps available at the parking area. We took the
white trail (white blaze marks on trees) to the Observation Point. It's around
a mile and a half each way. Of course, it is longer and hotter this time of
year. Take water and insect repellant with you. The trails are all easy
walking.
Anyway, the walk was fun and the target was the Observation Point (#4 on the
map), where we were able to watch the nesting northern rough-winged swallows.
We were actually standing at the top of a 'bluff' that overlooks Moses Creek
and were able to look 'down' on the sandy slopes where the swallows nest. We
watched about 7 swallows diving and feeding their young in mid-air.
This is definitely a place worth re-visiting later in the year. Be sure to
follow the maps and signage if you go.....or leave bread crumbs on the
trail.....special thanks to Bubba Scales for talking me into taking the hike.
thanks
