Sue,

I concur.
However, I believe you are missing the point. For all it's horn blowing,
ARMA has always been and will continue to "North American Centric". Twenty
years ago a conference in Australia or New Zealand would be completely out
of the question. Cost would have been prohibitive and the global nature of
information had not matured. Today we understand that all information is
global, solutions derive from a real time pan information community that
continues to thrive apart from the current multitude of information
management groups/organizations. That the reality of today's information
community has not permeated the xenophobic groups of North America should
come as no surprise. We still hold to the myth that we are leading the way
in information management and all others need come to us. You are right.
Hold to your course. I think it is a view with extreme merit and I would be
surprised if one or two folks didn't agree with you offline (d... lurkers).

Larry
Interested to hear you that you consider the total cost to an attendee of
around USD4,000 (and time off work). For that amount of money, you could
fly
to Cape Town, put up at great hotels, and still have change. I am sure it
would also be cheaper in Jamaica and Kuala Lumpur. Perhaps horizons need to
be
opened a little. Let's step outside the circle! Does the conference always
have to be in America if this is an International organisation? How about a
series of regional conferences, which take in other continents (or at least
plan this on a rotating basis).
Another Aussie 2c worth - at this rate, we will all get rich...
All the best

But.... the vendors rely on the probable walk through traffic of a prime
destination city when they book booths at the expo. To sell expo space, an
association conference has to be near the biggest possible customer base for
walk through. Every professional association with an expo attached to its
conference goes through the same hoops - big cities mean big expenses but
also mean more foot traffic.
