POST-DOC POSITION INVOLVING
MARINE TURTLE RESEARCH
University of Exeter
School of Biological & Chemical Sciences
Darwin Post-Doctoral Research Fellow
Applications are invited for the position of Darwin Post-Doctoral Research
Fellow to co-ordinate the “Darwin Initiative Assessment of the Coastal
Biodiversity of Anegada, British Virgin Islands”. The candidate should be a
scientist focused on both applied and fundamental biological research with
a demonstrable experience of species and habitat conservation, preferably
including community participation. The post will have a duration of 1 year
in the first instance, subject to review, from 1 October 2003.
The successful candidate will be based with the Marine Turtle Research
Group www.seaturtle.org/mtrg which is in the process of moving to the
Tremough campus of the University of Exeter in Cornwall. The CUC
initiative is a £96 million project aimed at expanding higher education
opportunities in Cornwall. From October 2004, the University of Exeter’s
Cornwall-based programmes will be taught on the new £50m Tremough campus,
near Falmouth. However, the post-holder will spend a large proportion of
the time undertaking project work in the British Virgin Islands (BVI) in
collaboration with local project partners (BVI Conservation and Fisheries
Department, BVI National Parks Trust, BVI Governors Office, H. Lavity
Stoutt Community College) and UK partners (Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds).
The post-holder will be involved in extensive conservation related field
monitoring and research into the birds, plants and marine turtles of
Anegada as well as helping to co-ordinate training workshops for
biodiversity professionals to develop capacity in local partners.
Additional workshops will cater to local students and help train guides for
ecotourism. Work will be carried out towards the promotion of biodiversity
through outreach workshops where community participation in all aspects of
the project will be sought. In addition, liaison with the popular media and
the design of educational materials will be important. Collaborating
writing responsibilities of the Darwin Fellow will include scientific
papers, interim reports and a Biodiversity Action Plan for Anegada.
Minimum qualifications should include an undergraduate degree in life
sciences and a PhD in a relevant subject area. In exceptional
circumstances, extensive relevant field experience may be considered in
lieu of a PhD. Key attributes will include demonstrable ability in field
ornithology, an established record of publishing results in peer-reviewed
journals, excellent English writing skills, and outstanding communication
abilities. Prior experience of tropical plant ecology and marine turtle
research would be useful but are not essential.
Salary up to £20,311 within the range £18,265 pa to £20,311 pa (under
review).
