STATION NIGHT

The past two "Station Night" evenings on Thursdays at the club station
have been very successful. Turnout at last night's event was four members
plus two guests. As long as turnout continues to be good, we'll keep the
station night going every other Thursday at 7pm. All are welcome!

RAIN GAUGE INSTALLED

Thanks to Jim Carr, KC4MHH, GARC now has a rain gauge along with the other
weather station sensors on the Dental Tower rooftop. The rain gauge has a
precision of 0.1" increments. The web page for the virtual weather
station has been updated and now includes the rainfall amounts. We still
lack a humidity sensor, so humidity does not read correctly. A shield is
still needed for the temperature sensor and offers to construct one will
be enthusiastically supported. A white ventilated can might work.

A combination outdoor temperature/humidity sensor is available from Peet
Bros. See photo: http://www.peetbros.com/images/humidity.gif

GARC FLOAT FOR UF HOMECOMING PARADE, NOV. 7TH

This just in! GARC is invited to participate in the 80th Annual
Homecoming Parade. Hundreds of organizations apply each year and more
than 150,000 people watch it and it is broadcast throughout north and
central Florida. University-affiliated entries receive priority in the
selection process. GARC has been in the parade the past 2 years.

The theme this year is "A Homecoming for the Ages". We will need a float
design that adheres to this theme. It can incorporate different decades
or time periods. The completed application is due NO LATER THAN Thursday
September 4, 2003 and requires a photo or drawing of the proposed float.
This year, we will want to pay special attention to the amplified audio
system to make sure that everyone can hear the message.

Please let me know if you are interested in participating or if you have
any suggestions for a float. Should we get a flatbed trailer? Tow the
tower-trailer again? How about working with GARS for some ideas ? Would
you rather walk in the parade or ride along on a float?

A copy of the application and guidelines are on the web at the UF
Homecoming website. http://www.ufhomecoming.org/events/parade.htm

SEAHORSE KEY WEEKEND AUGUST 15-17 FRI-SAT-SUN AT CEDAR KEY

Allan Pither, KG4JCC, is coordinating the SeaHorse key DXpedition. Warren
Croke NW4C and Carol Chesney have volunteered to help with the QSL cards.
A special event callsign has been obtained for the event, W4L.

If you would like to go, space is limited, and it will be about $30 per
person to stay over the weekend. Bring your own food & water. For more
information, contact Allan at [log in to unmask] (Allan is working on a
press release to get GARC a feature story in the Alligator or GNV Sun.)

Some pictures are available from the last DXpedition to Seahorse Key.

NEXT GARC MEETING

The plan is still set to meet at the Gainesville Ale house for the next
GARC meeting. If you plan to eat dinner, arrive around 6 p.m. and reserve
an area for about 12 persons or ask if anyone from the radio club is
there. We'll probably get the meeting started around 7 pm.

We'll discuss the planned events and other current and future activities
that may include a club picnic, Fall 2003 Student Organization Fair, fox
hunts, upcoming hamfests, and another Ham Radio Demo day.

73,
W4UFL
Jeff Capehart
