OPEN HOUSE Tonite at 7pm at W4DFU Gator Amateur Radio Club Station
As mentioned earlier this week, I'll be down at the club station tonight
to provide an orientation on the radio equipment for new members. This
will also be an "Open House" for new members or students interested in
GARC and ham radio who want to find out more about the club.
I'll run through hookup, power-on, antennas, tuning the frequency,
logging, and other basic club station rules. We have a copy of the
emergency plan at the station as well. There are also computers connected
to the Internet, a television, refrigerator, electronics workbench with
test equipment including multi-meter, frequency counter, wattmeter, and
soldering iron. If there's enough interest, we'll do this monthly.
REPORT FROM STUDENT ORGANIZATION FAIR Tuesday July 8, 2003
GARC got mentioned today in the Alligator! Check page 8, top of column 4
of the article titled "UF leadership organization sponsors daylong fair".
That's pretty good! Out of 600 student organizations, 96 participated,
and GARC was mentioned!
Todd Sherman, KB4MHH, was there all day with an EMWIN demo, APRS demo, and
an HT to demo the 91 repeater. Several students and staff expressed
interest in ham radio with many taking flyers and membership applications.
Carol Chesney, KG4FEX, was a life-saver who brought extension cords and a
big tent canopy for the table which was located out on the sidewalk in
FULL SUN! With a 105 degree heat index, most of the organizations vacated
before noon because they couldn't take the heat! Scott West, KG4VWD, and
Bruce McIntosh, KG4WKY also helped. Bruce even brought along a 6-meter
roll-up J-pole and dual-band 2-meter/6-meter transceiver and power supply.
Susan Tipton, K9PDL, and I came out for the noon lunch hour to help.
Thank you everyone who participated and helped promote GARC, ham radio,
and recruit new members into the club!
MEMBERSHIP APPLICATION
If you know someone interested in GARC, please pass along this membership
application! Your help is needed in recruitment to fill the ranks in the
club. Pass along to any interested students! Post on bulletin boards!
Even if you already consider yourself a member, (you're on this list,
right?) please fill it out and send it in. There's no charge with campus
mail and it will greatly help the officers with membership duties.

ANTENNA PARTY
We need to take down the GAP antenna as the first priority for antenna
work at the DSB roof. Tentative plans are for EARLY Sunday morning July
20th. That means dawn...when it is cool around 5:30-6 am to get the most
time in before the sun gets too hot (after 10 am). We need at least 4
people to help. Email W4UFL if you are interested.
NEXT MEETING REMINDER:
Tuesday Aug. 5th, 7:00 PM Club Station D11-27 DSB
73,
Jeff
