Manukau City Council, Auckland, New Zealand uses a 'virtual CD' facility
that comes with our EDMS software (Alchemy). We generate CD copies of
our database but the users do not retrieve the data from these CDs. They
retrieve the data from magnetic hard drive storage devices. Having made
CD copies of our database, we then copy the CDs back up to magnetic
storage as 'virtual CDs'. When you do a query on the database it thinks
it is retrieving the data from a CD but it is actually retrieving it
from a hard drive which is pretending to be a CD storage device.
The form of magnetic hard drive storage we use is a Storage Area
Network (SAN) with several terrabytes of storage space.
The retrieval from the magnetic hard drive is very much faster than it
would be from a CD.
If we have corruption on the hard drive we can take the original CD and
copy it back to the hard drive replacing the corrupted 'virtual CD'.
