The UF Office of Information Technology (OIT) invites you to explore the
December 2003 edition of "IT Connections" -- the on-line newsletter of
UF-OIT, at http://nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/~oitnews/ .

Intended to help foster communication, cooperation, and a sense of
community among the various areas of the UF Office of Information
Technology, IT Connections will contain highlights from each of our areas.
Additionally, we expect the articles to be of interest to everyone at UF
who wishes to be kept up-to-date on the activities of UF-OIT.

Each area of UF-OIT may contribute news for inclusion in the newsletter. As
each "issue" is complete, e-mail notification will be sent to all OIT
staff, and other interested IT groups, such as ITAC, Net-Managers, CCC, the
CNS Instruction & Research Users' Group, CNS Administrative Users' Group,
and CNS NEWS.

We hope you will enjoy this inside overview of the University of Florida's
Office of Information Technology!

 * Dr. Frazier's Office

-Open Letter to Staff
It is fall, the air is cooling a bit, students, faculty and staff members
are firmly fixed in their academic year routines, and mercifully football
seems back on track. But the biggest local event by far has been the
appointment of a new President for UF. Dr. Bernie Machen will begin work
formally on January 5th. Notably, less than two weeks after his
appointment, he came to campus as a first of several visits to begin
getting a feel for this very large and very complex university. President
Machen accepts and supports UF's aspirations to reach the ranks of the top
10 publics and the top 20 universities in the country. We all know that
this is a very ambitious goal. But if one looks back 30 years and
acknowledges the progress in that time, it is clear this is just the next
incremental step in a long and steady rise to distinction.

-Information Technology Pagelet Now Available in myUFL Portal
Faculty, students and staff now have access to a new source of news on
Information Technology at UF; the Information Technology pagelet for the UF
portal. This site is designed to provide the kinds of information that one
previously might have had to search for in many locations and from multiple
sources.

-OIT Celebrates Accomplishments at September Town Hall Meeting
Another Office of Information Technology (OIT) Town Hall Meeting took
place on September 26, 2003, at the Keene Faculty Center in Dauer Hall.

them catch up with each other and celebrate their accomplishments.

-IT Policy Changes Announced
University of Florida Vice Provost for Information Technology Chuck
Frazier and Information Technology Security Manager Kathy Bergsma announced
some updates and changes to UF IT policies. These updates were reviewed and
approved in the Information Technology Advisory Council (ITAC) and the ITAC
committee structure. Note too that a new policy was created to address
spam.

 * Academic Technology

-Health Science Center Testing Lab Used for WebCT Test Administration
More than 1,000 students taking a course called "Man's Food" shuffled in
and out of the Health Science Center Testing Lab to take their midterm exam
online in a secure testing environment. "Man's Food" uses the WebCT course
management system to create, deliver, and machine score online tests.

-Telecom: What You Need to Know about Wireless Number Portability
Beginning November 24th, 2003, wireless number portability will be
available in the 100 largest metropolitan areas nationwide. Wireless number
portability simply means keeping your phone number and choosing a new
carrier to provide your service.

Much confusion may occur simply because of misunderstanding of the most
basic aspects of portability. Here is an overview of what you need to know
about wireless number portability:...

about to be replaced by a searchable computer CD that can be read at almost
any Windows workstation. The CD-Metafile replacement for microfiche began

 * IT Security

-The Summer of the "Worm"
In August of 2003, a number of Internet "worms" (self-replicating code
designed to cause harm to computer systems) wrought havoc with computer
networks everywhere, leading a number of experts to dub this the "Summer of
the Worm." With the rapid spread of malicious code like Blaster, Nachi, and
SoBig, UF's Network Security team barely had a chance to catch their
collective breath. According to Kathy Bergsma, UF IT Security Coordinator,
"August 2003 was 100 times worse than the normal month" in terms of the
threat to computer security from viruses and worms.

-ITSA Day Celebrates 6 Years of Security
Security is "job one," Al Johnson from the Federal Bureau of Investigation
(FBI) said during his presentation on "Forensic Pitfalls." Johnson said
risk is part of the Information Technology world in which we function.

On October 8, IT professionals from across the state gathered for the 6th
straight year at UF's J. Wayne Reitz Union to learn from national experts
in the field of IT security.

 * IT Training

-Peer2Peer Experts Cover Back-ups, Licenses & Patches
The fifth in an ongoing series of Peer2Peer seminars was held on October
29th in the J. Wayne Reitz Union at the University of Florida. Peer2Peer,
an informal training session, is sponsored by the Information Technology
Training Committee to provide updates on many of the changes and new
activities involving Information Technology (IT) on campus.
This seminar included information on Network Storage and Archiving,
Software Licensing Services, and concluded with Patch Management.

-IT Orientation Covers Networking, Software & Training Resources
The second annual Information Technology Orientation for new UF employees
was held on October 21. This session was designed to give the attendees an
introduction to the vast number of IT resources available to them at the
University of Florida.

While the orientation is primarily intended for new employees, a poll of
the attendees showed that a majority of attendees were not newly hired
employees, but rather, experienced staff looking for the latest news on
important IT issues.
