The maintenance of separate files for personnel records and medical records
has always been a practical approach to the handling of personnel matters.
Personnel records deal with the administrative aspects of an individual employment
and permit the application of a relatively short term retention periods.
Medical records address the well being of an employee during employment and have a
significant impact on records requirements dealing with workmen's
compensation, OSHA, HIPPA and have retention requirements that, in many cases, vary from
two to 30 years and far exceed administrative needs. It is a practical way to
reduce file size and maintenance costs and access to many legal actions.
