Details:
1. IDH COURSES, GEN ED CREDIT AND YOUR AUDIT: If you took an IDH course, it is likely that your audit does not reflect the Gen Ed credit earned. There is a complicated reason for this. The solution is to fill in a very short form in our office and we will fix for you so the audit is correct and shows you have done the Gen Ed credit the course promised. No need to panic over this. Just drop by some time and do the short request form and we will fix. (There are also some special topics numbers we use that may exhibit the same problem and we can fix these too). Please note we can't do this until you have earned a grade in the course.
2. NEW HONORS COURSE AVAILABLE: SSA 3730: Language in African Society (1687) MWF 8 MAT 112 Gen Ed HI
Africa is an ethno-linguistically diverse continent with about 2,500 known languages. This diversity makes the study of languages and its role in the development of African societies more interesting. This course will seek to uncover the interaction between language and socio-political dimensions in African societies. In other words, what roles does language play in the mix of a country's demographic map, in a country's educational system, in a country's topography, in a country's governance, in a country's history, in a country's development? And, how do these socio-political dimensions impact the language in question. The course will deal specifically with five sub-Saharan African countries namely Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Botswana and Nigeria. Whenever possible, comparative examples from other diverse societies within and outside Africa will be given. The course requirements will include participation in the discussion of the assigned readings, two tests (mid-term and final) and a term paper. The required book for this course is Ali & Alamin Mazrui, The Power of Babel (Oxford 1998). Other readings and information will be distributed in class. Students should bear in mind that this is not a language class and knowledge of an African language is neither necessary nor required.
