Beggs & Hurlbert (1997) look at gender differences in the value of
workplace social ties. Considering that the weak ties which are so
helpful in the job search process are often established outside the
workplace through participation in voluntary organizations, they note
that women may develop less diverse network than men, because they tend
to be involved in voluntary associations which center on family and
childbearing responsibilities
