Tuesday afternoon I arrived at Huguenot a little after 3 p.m. and was
immediately greeted by a pair of frigatebirds over the river. The birds were
heading inland along the river and could be seen as far west as the ferry
slip. When I left at 7 p.m. one bird had returned and was soaring sedately
over the river and at times immediately overhead. This is only the second
time I have seen this species here in thirty years.
Also present was a flock of 32 solitary sandpipers feeding on the flats in
the estuary. An unusual species in this location. Around 40 great
black-backed gulls were present but only two lesser black-backs. A few dozen
common terns were seen but this is a low number for this time of year. The
same for black terns, only five were seen. Caspians were quite numerous,
around 150 individuals. One juvenile gull billed was amongst them. No
sooty's were seen though I spent about 2 hours scanning offshore for them.
