SIDNEY FISHMAN, PHD
Educator, Pioneer, Visionary

It was with deep sadness that I learned of the passing of Dr. Sidney
Fishman earlier this week.  I can still picture Dr. Fishman sitting
behind his desk at NYU's Prosthetic Orthotic program with his stern look
offering a glimpse into his vast knowledge and understanding of persons
with limb loss and the effects of amputation.  I was honored to have
been a student of such a distinguished gentleman.

Dr. Fishman was vital in the development and organization of the
National Academy of Science's first university based prosthetic
education center. He was the director of the world's first Orthotic/
Prosthetic degree program and collaborated with other great pioneers in
our profession, while encouraging advancements in prosthetic and
orthotic education.

O and P education continued to be a main focus of Dr. Fishman even after
the closing of NYU's program and his subsequent retirement from formal
teaching. As recently as late last year, Dr. Fishman continued to offer
his guidance and knowledge freely to our profession as we embark on the
next phase of our future education.

In 1996, Dr. Fishman was presented with an Honorary Membership to the
Academy for his accomplishments and dedication to Orthotics and
Prosthetics. Throughout his illustrious career, he raised the bar and
helped to define the future of the Prosthetic Orthotic profession.

On behalf of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists, I would
like to offer my sincere condolences to the Fishman family as we all
mourn the loss of our friend, mentor, and true pioneer of our
profession.

Dr. Fishman, thank you for your passion, your leadership and your
vision.
