How timely that the question of international records retention law should come up - ARMA International is having a webinar on the very topic May 31, followed by live chat with the presenter, a famous records retention consultant. : ) Such a deal!

I have been watching the e-mails since I have joined the group and now realize how naive I am. I work for a world-wide manufacturing corporation and got handed the job of Records and Information about 9 years ago for the divisions in North America, Canada and Mexico. The job was a side thing to start. (Crazy - I know) Then a couple of years ago I got the job of being the person to gather all information for litigation. Since then, I have tried to get a better understanding and I have made some great improvements to it. I am now listed as the RIM Supervisor but have now realized I'm still far from what a true Records Manager should be. For example, all of my retention schedules are in place from what was previously decided before I joined. If a change is needed, it is authorized through our legal department who,in my opinion, (sorry if this comes out wrong) do not really know where to get the information themselves on how long something should be retained. I think they just make a decision on how long they feel it will be valuable. I know that we are in complaince with documents pertaining to HR, Finance-GA, etc. but what about other documents?
It seems I am able to find plenty of documentation to support government agencies, but does anyone have good suggestions for me on where to get valuable insight for retention schedules in a manufacturing organization?
One problem that I have is that our corporate offices are in Stockholm Sweden and I'm sure many of you know that the laws are very different over there. So getting the buy-in to do what is necessary always takes documentation.
Any ideas?
