HONORS ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Florida Collegiate Honors Council Writing
Contest:
The annual Florida Collegiate Honors Council writing contest is seeking
submissions of your best work. Categories for the competition are a)
documented research or critical thinking; b) poetry writing; and c)
fiction writing. First and second place in each category receive $200
and $150 respectively plus all expenses of attending the FCHC conference
in Tampa on February 22-24. Papers will be presented at 7:00pm on
Friday, February 22. You must be present to receive the prize and the
recognition. Full contest rules and conference information is available

Submissions must be received in the Honors office (29 Tigert) by
Thursday, November 1. Contact Dr. Drummond at [log in to unmask] for more

2. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Discontinuation of Entrepreneurship Minor
in College of Business:
The Warrington College of Business is discontinuing the Entrepreneurship
minor effective in the Spring term. The WCBA will offer GEB4117 during
the Spring semester for the last time. Accordingly, any student who has
not successfully completed this course by the Spring term will not be
able to complete the minor. They will continue to approve minor
applications for students who have already completed GEB4117, and will
continue to certify the Entrepreneurship minor for any student who has
successfully completed the requirements. If you have any questions,
please contact advisors in the College of Business directly.
3. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Emergency Contact Information on ISIS:
To ensure the class registration process goes smoothly, you should plan
to have the following information on hand before you enter the ISIS
class registration system: work, local home, and emergency contact
information for you and your designated emergency contact (most likely a
relative).
The needed information includes addresses, phone numbers (cell phone
numbers if applicable), and e-mail addresses. All students will be
encouraged to speed the process by providing the information before
their registration time. The update page will be available beginning
October 22 and throughout the registration period on ISIS. An example of
the page can also be found on ISIS.
Please log onto ISIS to take care of this matter prior to honors course
registration on October 25, so you are not slowed down in the system
while trying to register for your honors course.
4. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Advisorpalooza (TODAY):
Got questions about your spring schedule? Honors advisors are headed
your way to answer all of your questions about upcoming registration. At
least 5-6 advisors will be available at Hume on Friday, October 19 from
3:00-5:00pm for extreme walk-in advising! Want more? Several of your
Honors Preview Staffers from this past summer (Matt, Travus, and Jeremy)
will also be there to help you with your schedule! Refreshments will be

5. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Course Registration Information:
Time to go to Registration Prep at www.isis.ufl.edu (click on
Registration left hand side) to get the info you need about spring
course registration. Registration for spring classes starts Monday,
October 29. You will find your registration appointment time on ISIS -
this is the date and time you can begin registering for courses on ISIS
(you can register then or any time thereafter until the system closes).
Honors course registration will take place on ISIS on Thursday, October
25 and Friday, October 26 from 9:00am-5:00pm. You will be able to
register for one honors course each day. Early honors course
registration is only available for students who started at UF during
Summer 2006 or later. All other honors students will be able to register
for honors courses during their regular registration time.
The tentative Honors course booklet is now available online at
www.honors.ufl.edu .
You MUST get all HOLDS on your record removed before you can register.
Check ISIS to see if you have any holds on your record. You will not be
able to register for any courses if you have holds on your record.
All Engineering majors must see an Engineering advisor
(http://www.eng.ufl.edu/studentaffairs/advising/index.php) to get their
Advising Hold removed.
Also, freshmen must complete the Alcohol Education Requirement so that
hold can be removed.
Honors advisors are NOT able to remove either of these holds.
6. RESEARCH: UF Science for Life Research Awards Competition:
We are happy to announce that we are now accepting applications for the
next HHMI Science for Life undergraduate research awards competition.
Eligibility this year will be freshmen, sophomores, and any juniors who
are nominated through the OASIS (Minority Affairs) office.
To apply for the award, please go to www.honors.ufl.edu/hhmi and click
on the Fall 2007 Undergrad Award Application link. The deadline for the
next set of awards will be Friday, November 9 at 5:00pm - thanks to many
more units on campus that have joined Science for Life, we will have up
to 100 awards to give!

SHO is hosting their monthly Sundaes on Sunday, October 21 at 8:00pm.

8. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Career Options for Economics Majors (NEW
POSTING):
The Career Resource Center is sponsoring a workshop on career options
for Economics majors on Tuesday, October 23 at 4:05pm in the CRC, first
floor Reitz Union.
9. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: CISE Career Development Workshop (NEW
POSTING):
The first annual CISE (Computer and Information Science and Engineering)
Career Development Workshop will be held on October 23 at 6:00pm at
Touchdown Terrace inside Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The event is an
opportunity for computer science and computer engineering students to
meet with top industry representatives. Take advantage of this chance to
interact with company representatives, score internships, co-ops, or
full-time positions, get your resume critiqued, hone your networking
skills, enjoy free food and win amazing door prizes! This event is open
to all CISE, ECE, DAS, and DIS undergraduate and graduate students.

10. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Student Affairs Career Expo (NEW

Imagine working with dedicated people in a diverse work environment, on
the cutting edge of learning, making a difference in people's
lives-that's what a job in Student Affairs is like. Want to learn more
about this profession?
Come to the Student Affairs Career Expo, as part of Careers in Student
Affairs Month in October. There will be opportunities to hear from and
meet UF student affairs professionals and graduate students, obtain
information on various graduate preparatory programs and meet people
like you-interested in making a difference with your career.
Beyond their current positions, these panelists have experience in a
variety of functional areas in student affairs, including Greek Life,
international higher education, student activities, and much more. Hear
from them about work-life balance, finding the right position for your
interests, and the range of traditional and non-traditional
opportunities within the profession of student affairs.

11. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Paying for Law School: Law School
Financial Aid (NEW POSTING):
Interested in applying to UF Levin College of Law? Curious about
financial aid? This workshop is geared toward informing you about
financial aid options from Levin College of Law. A representative from
UF Levin College of Law will present.

12. ANNOUNCEMENT: Writing On The Wall Essay Contest:
Let your voice be heard when the wall comes down. Each WOTW builds a
wall that is painted with offensive words and statements people have
said to them. At the end of the week, the wall is knocked down. This is
your chance to be one of two speakers at the closing ceremony. The essay
should reflect on diversity/hate/prejudice or the like. The rules are
that it needs to be between 2-3 pages and the deadline is December 1.

13. STUDY ABROAD: UF in Utrecht, the Netherlands Info Session:
Want to spend six weeks this summer in a beautiful city 25 minutes south
of Amsterdam? Meet former participants of this fun and affordable

14. VOLUNTEER: FAB LGBTQ Advocacy Trip Accepting Participant
Applications (NEW POSTING):
Looking for an exciting way to spend your spring break? Interested in or
want to learn more about LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender,
Queer) Advocacy? Florida Alternative Breaks (FAB) offers students the
unique opportunity to work on community-based service projects dealing
with social issues. FAB is still accepting participant applications for
the LGBTQ Advocacy spring break trip. If interested please turn in a
participant application to the Dean of Students Office.

15. LEADERSHIP: Student Ambassadors of Ethics and Civility:
The Office of Student Judicial Affairs has developed a new program - the
Student Ambassadors of Ethics and Civility. The Ambassadors will help
educate the campus community about the UF Student Conduct Code and Honor
Code as well as help plan programs and events for Ethics and Civility
Week in the spring. Students can find more information and apply online

16. LEADERSHIP: Alachua County Advisory Board Positions:
Gain experience, network with local professionals and shape your local
government by getting involved in monthly organized meetings. Students

17. EVENT: Alachua County Fair (NEW POSTING):
The Alachua County Fair starts today and runs through October 28! The
admission price is $5 for adults, $2 for children 4-12, and children
under 4 are admitted free. With paid gate admission, visitors may
purchase a $15 armband to ride all of the rides. For more information,

18. EVENT: Golden Key Presents Diabetes Welcome Wagon Fundraiser
(NEW POSTING):
Golden Key is hosting its Diabetes Welcome Wagon fundraiser to help kids
with Type I diabetes. Join us for bowling at Alley Katz from
10:00am-1:00pm on Sunday, October 21. Admittance is just $15 and
includes unlimited bowling and shoe rental. All proceeds go to specially
designed gift baskets for children who have just been diagnosed and
their families. Come out and have fun while helping out this great
cause!
19. EVENT: Society of Physics Students:
It's time for very free and therefore very tasty pizza, again! The
second SPS meeting is on Monday, October 22 at 6:30pm in NPB 2205. We
will be discussing, among other things, a paintball outing, a Physics is
Phun show at an elementary school, and summer research opportunities
with NASA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology in
Washington DC, and National SPS in Washington, DC. You need not be a
physics major to take advantage of the opportunities and pizza.
