HONORS ANNOUNCEMENTS
1. ANNOUNCEMENT: Honors Advising for the Spring Semester:
Honors advisors will hold regular walk-in hours in the offices next to
the Hume classrooms each week during the spring semester.
Mondays from 2:00-3:00pm and 4:00-5:00pm.
Tuesdays from 2:00-4:30pm.
Wednesdays from 2:00-3:00pm and 4:00-5:00pm.
Thursdays from 3:00-5:00pm.
Fridays from 2:00-3:00pm and 4:00-5:00pm.
Walk-in advising meetings typically run for 5-10 minutes and are,
therefore, most useful for quick questions about registration. They
generally are not recommended if you need a lengthy review of
requirements or want to discuss long-term planning or undergraduate
opportunities, especially during peak registration times. Those
questions are best answered during an advising appointment (see below).
Advisors also are available by appointment in 140 Tigert Hall from
9:00am-4:30pm, excluding lunch. Please call 352-392-1519 to make an
appointment.

full-time while earning academic credit in Washington, D.C. We offer
hundreds of internships and numerous courses every fall, spring, and
summer for students of all majors. Participants are provided with

Defense, The Smithsonian, US Attorney's Office, Red Cross, Merrill

Students also complete an academic course (selected from over 40
offered) and participate in a variety of career and professional
development programming and other activities through our Leadership
Forum.
The Washington Center has a strong affiliation with UF, and many

and provide them with everything they need to fulfill their commitment

16. SERVICE: Census and Survey of the Homeless in Gainesville:
The Alachua County Coalition for the Homeless and Hungry is conducting
its 2007 point-in-time census and survey of the homeless on January
25-26. The survey yields important demographic information about the
sheltered and unsheltered homeless population in our community, allows
us to better understand needs and the gaps in services, and provides
critical data for bringing more money into the community for homeless
services. Additionally, the survey provides volunteers with a
street-level glimpse into the lives of homeless individuals and families
and their needs to move themselves out of homelessness and back into
safe, affordable housing.
If you would like to assist with the survey, please contact Beth
O'Grady, Coordinator of the Alachua County Coalition for the Homeless
and Hungry, at 378-0460, or Jon DeCarmine, Executive Director of the
Office on Homelessness, at 372-2549, as soon as possible. The Homeless
Coalition has an agreement with the Center for Leadership and Service to
validate any volunteer hours committed to this project. Volunteers are
needed at all hours of the day.
We ask that volunteers attend one of the following trainings to
familiarize themselves with the survey, its administration, and basic
information on homelessness and personal safety while conducting the
surveys: Friday, January 19 at noon at Alachua County Housing Authority,
703 NE 1st St. Tuesday, January 23 at 5:00pm at Alachua County Housing
Authority.
If you cannot make one of the above trainings, but would still like to
volunteer, contact one of us and we can set up additional times for
training, or come to you or your organization and provide training
on-site.
17. EVENT: Writing on the Wall Project (NEW POSTING):
The Writing on the Wall Project will be tabling the week of January
22-26 at the Reitz Union Colonnade and the Plaza of the Americas from
8:30am-3:00pm. The project is designed to raise awareness about the
barriers we construct and to create a physical representation of the
hate that divides us. Come out and paint a brick and be a part of this
unique experience.
The tabling schedule is as follows:
Monday, January 22 - Reitz Union North Terrace. Tuesday, January 23 -
Plaza of the Americas. Wednesday, January 24 - Plaza of the Americas.
Thursday, January 25 - Reitz Union North Terrace. Friday, January 26 -
Reitz Union North Terrace.
On Monday, January 29 a wall will be built on the Plaza of the Americas
and will stand for a week. The closing ceremonies for the project will
be held on Friday, February 2 at 1:20pm, with the wall itself scheduled
to come down at 1:45pm.
18. EVENT: Life in Debt Showing at the Hippodrome (NEW POSTING):
The Civic Media Center will be showing the film "Life in Debt" at the
Hippodrome. "Life in Debt" is a woven tapestry of sequences focusing on
the stories of individual Jamaicans whose strategies for survival and
parameters of day-to-day existence are determined by the U.S. and other
foreign economic agendas. By combining traditional documentary telling
with a stylized narrative framework, the complexity of international
lending, structural adjustment policies and free trade will be
understood in the context of the day-to-day realities of the people
whose lives they impact.
The movie will be shown Monday, January 22 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm at the
Hippodrome, 24 SE 2nd Place, downtown. The cost is $3-10 on a sliding
scale.
