All,
While not an unusual owl, we did net a FL subspecies of Burrowing Owl under unusual circumstances in Cape Florida (Key Biscayne) on 10/15/07. A female Cooper's Hawk was caught in the mist net and about 10 inches away, also in the net, was a headless Burrowing Owl. We found formidable puncture wounds on the owl's upper breast so we inferred that the hawk hit the net while carrying the owl. Although not known as a migratory species, we do see Burrowing Owls in Cape Florida each fall, sometimes snacking on Common Yellowthroats.
