HONORS ANNOUNCEMENTS

1. NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: Carnegie Junior Fellows Program:
The Carnegie Junior Fellows Program is a tremendous award for graduating seniors (or students who have graduated during the last academic year) who are interested in political science, economics and international policy. Each year this highly competitive fellowship is given to 8-10 graduates nationwide to work on the Carnegie Endowment's projects such as non-proliferation, democracy building, trade, US leadership, China-related issues and, Middle Eastern studies and Russian/Eurasian studies.

Duties can include conducting research for books, co-authoring journal articles and policy papers, participating in meetings with high-level officials, contributing to congressional testimony and organizing briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials. Local deadline is November 24. UF may nominate two students for the national deadline in January.

See http://www.carnegieendowment.org/about/index.cfm?fa=jrFellows for an FAQ list and contact Regan Garner at [log in to unmask] for more the application and related materials.

2. ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Spring Course Registration:
Spring registration is approaching quickly. You can view the online schedule of courses at www.registrar.ufl.edu/soc . The course descriptions for honors courses should be available by October 24 at www.honors.ufl.edu

To find your spring registration start time, visit ISIS, www.isis.ufl.edu , and click on "Registration Prep". This is the time you may begin registering for spring courses online. Note that you do not meet with an advisor to register - everything is done on ISIS.

Honors course registration for students in their first three semesters will take place Thursday and Friday, October 30 and 31, from 9:00am-5:00pm. You will only be able to register for an honors course during this time, and you can register for up to one course per day. Honors course registration takes place on ISIS just as you would for your regular courses, www.isis.ufl.edu . Students who have moved beyond their third semester in Honors will be able to register for available honors courses during their regular registration time.

**All students should check ISIS to view any holds.**

All holds must be removed prior to registering for courses. In most cases, an honors advisor *cannot* remove these holds for you.

All engineering majors must meet with an advisor in engineering (*not honors*) to get your engineering advising hold removed. To view the list of engineering advisors by department, visit http://www.eng.ufl.edu/studentaffairs/advising/index.php

All first-year students must remove their alcohol education holds prior to registering. For more information, visit http://www.dso.ufl.edu/nsp/firstyearexperience/msb.php

Please plan ahead now, so there won't be any problems once registration begins.

Remember, if you want to meet with an honors advisor, please call 352-392-1519 to make an appointment, rather than e-mailing an advisor directly.

3. ANNOUNCEMENT: Nominate Faculty for HHMI Distinguished Mentor Awards:
Are you working with an outstanding UF faculty mentor? If so please consider nominating him or her for the next HHMI Distinguished Mentor (HHMI-DM) competition so that he/she might receive an award of $10,000. The DM awards will be based on demonstrated excellence in undergraduate mentoring associated with research in the life sciences.

More information on the HHMI-DM program can be found at http://hhmi.chem.ufl.edu/applications/mentor/DM_Award_Description_Oct_07.pdf . We anticipate awarding 5-6 for UF faculty. To nominate your professor, read the guidelines carefully and make sure you feel he or she qualifies, then send an e-mail to Diana Nolte at [log in to unmask] with a subject line of "I nominate Professor XX for an HHMI-DM award". In the body of the e-mail nomination give the professor's full name, academic department at UF, and e-mail address. Also please compose a sentence or two on why you feel this professor should get an award. If you nominate your mentor, it is a good idea to let him or her know that you've done this.

4. RESEARCH: HHMI Science for Life Research Awards:
We are now accepting applications for the next competition of the HHMI Science for Life undergraduate research awards. For those of you who do not yet have an award, we hope that you have all now connected with a research group and constructed a research plan. Eligibility this year will be freshmen, sophomores, and any juniors who are nominated through the OASIS (Minority Affairs) office. If you are ready, apply early as we make some offers to exceptional candidates immediately rather than waiting until a deadline. The application can be found at http://hhmi.chem.ufl.edu

5. STUDY ABROAD: Honors in Paris Applications (NEW POSTING):
The application deadline has been extended! The Paris Research Center is still accepting applications for the Honors in Paris 2009 program. For more information, contact us as soon as possible at [log in to unmask] or visit our website at www.clas.ufl.edu/PRC
