Subject: Confusing black backed gulls
Hi all:
With just two days to go to the St. Pete Christmas Bird Count I scouted the bridges north of the Sunshine bridges on I-275 to see what gulls were there – especially looking for the black backed gull that hang out in the area..
This is for all you gull experts out there. I have tentatively identified the black backed gull as a Lesser. The only other choice is a Greater. The problem is that the head & neck is very whitish and unmarked. whereas this would make it a Greater. The legs look yellowish in coloration. There was a Herring Gull that I threw for comparison it obviously has pinkish or flesh colored legs. I guess sometimes these plumage can be out of season.
