Today, 12/15, I found an immature male Surf Scoter in the Halifax River
in Port Orange, Volusia County. The bird was found about ½ mile south
of Aunt Catfish's Restaurant on Halifax Drive. This spot is also good
for evening concentrations of Red-breasted Mergansers and Horned Grebes.
At sunset on 12/13, I found 77 Red-breasted Mergansers and 14 Horned
Grebes in this same spot.
Today on County Line Road, at the Brevard-Volusia border, I found a
beautiful male Painted Bunting ( a bird that is not often found this far
north in the winter). The area also held a Vesper Sparrow, Swamp
Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, and lots of Savannah Sparrows.
On the Shiloh Marshes there were thousands of Coots and a good
assortment of ducks. The most unusual birds were about 10 Redheads
mixed in with a huge flock of several thousand scaup at the north end of
Indian River Lagoon.
