1. FACULTY RENEWAL REMINDER (FOR ITEMS DUE OCT. 1)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Faculty members are reminded that many loans will come due on October 1.
Please go to http://uf.catalog.fcla.edu/uf.jsp?A=1&Login=1   to find a list of items on your account, and to identify those items for which you would like the loan period renewed.
Please remember that some special items may have short loan periods.   Contact Paul Losch ([log in to unmask]) with any problems regarding items from the Latin American Collection.
2.      HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15), the UF Libraries have:

-Hosted a joint meeting of the Hispanic Student Association and the Association of Hispanic Alumni (Sept. 10).

-Loaned various rare objects for the exhibit "Nueva York: (1613 – 1945)," organized by El Museo del Barrio and the New York Historical Society (see https://www.nyhistory.org/web/default.php?section=exhibits_collections&page=exhibit_detail&id=4833639 ) . UF's specific contributions are a signed first edition of Martí's Versos Sencillos (published in New York) and papers from the Braga Brothers Sugar Company, which help to document the city's cultural and economic ties to Latin America over the centuries.

-Created our own small display of books on Latino and Latina contributions to US culture and history. These may be viewed in (and borrowed from) our LAC reading room.

3.     DR. DAVID BUSHNELL (1923-2010)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are among the many who are sorry to note the passing of Dr. David Bushnell, Professor Emeritus of Latin American History.  We will miss his regular visits to the library, his inspiring dedication to research and his sustained generosity to our collection.
The leading newspapers and magazines of Colombia have lamented his loss, calling him a pioneer among those seeking to explain that country to the rest of the world.
An obituary prepared by his son and our colleague, Peter Bushnell, Cataloger for Latin American Studies and Music, appeared in the Gainesville Sun, and is now online at http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/gainesville/obituary.aspx?n=david-bushnell&pid=145215852&fhid=6683  .
