Some products do offer flexible retention that allows you to go back from 'forever' to let's say 60 days or set retention policies based upon keyword, but you have to do your research. Also .. potentially look into if in the long run you want to not only add email, but potentially file system and sharepoint data as not all vendors offer that functionality if you want. Its really difficult to swap archiving products so it isn't bad if you spend a little bit more time to do your homework and pick something that will really work for you.
Not all vendors support Groupwise or Notes if that is what your messaging software is. I should one of these days write a vendor neutral article or paper on choices what people need to think about.
