2.	EVENT: Capital One Information Sessions:
Honors Gators & Capital One: Capital One, a growing innovator in financial services, is actively recruiting Florida Gators! From their one week Summit for Developing Leaders to their internships and full-time analyst positions, Capital One offers a variety of opportunities for students of all majors. 3.	EVENT: Partners in the Parks Info Session:
Partners in the Parks is a week-long outdoor experiential learning program sponsored by Southern Utah University and the National Parks Service in cooperation with the National Collegiate Honors Council. In 2012 we are planning eight summer projects at national parks across the country offering unique opportunities for collegiate honors students and faculty to visit areas of the American landscape noted for their beauty, significance and lasting value. Seminars led by university faculty and park personnel will include historical, scientific, cultural, and other important areas unique to a given park. Projects will also take advantage of exciting recreational opportunities in the parks to broaden participants' understanding of the overall value of national parks to our country and its citizens. 

2012 summer sites include: Acadia, Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Bryce Canyon, Fire/Ellis Island, Grand Canyon / Parashant, Olympic, Sequoia / King's Canyon, and Virgin Islands. 

Funding is available through the Honors Program to help offset some of the cost of these trips. We will have a Partners in the Parks information session on Tuesday, January 24 at 4:00pm in 302 Infirmary. You'll have a chance to hear from former PITP participants, as well as learn about scholarship opportunities. 4.	EVENT: Sundaes on Sunday:
Sundaes on Sunday presents: The That 70's SHO edition. Come out to Hume Commons at 7:00pm on January 22 and enjoy some psychedelic rainbow sherbet and episodes of our favorite 70s friends. Bring your own t-shirt to tie-dye and come dressed in your favorite hippie attire. Peace and love is just one scoop away.

5.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Participate in The Wall and Win Starbucks Gift Card (NEW POSTING, TODAY):
Smiley and West ask: 'Is Occupy Wall Street the Civil Rights Movement of our time?'

On January 20 at 6:00pm, famed TV and radio host Tavis Smiley along with provocative democratic intellectual and best-selling author Cornel West bring their joint project, "The Poverty Tour: A Call to Conscience," to the Bob Graham Center in the Pugh Hall Ocora. As part of their talk, the two intellectuals turned activists will use data collected on the Bob Graham Center's recently launched Civil Debate Wall to guide their discussion.

6.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Collaborating with Strangers Workshop:
Hey stranger...looking for a way to turn small talk into big ideas? Collaborating with Strangers Workshops are designed to connect students, faculty and researchers on campus during 3-minute speed-meetings. You'll walk away with new friends, more resources, solutions and creative ideas than you could have ever imagined.

7.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Employer Resume Critiques:
Do your students need feedback on their resume? Encourage them to have it reviewed by an employer during a 1-on-1 critique session. Students are assisted on a first-come-first serve basis. Employer resume critiques will take place on Monday, January 23 from 10:00am-3:00pm in the Career Resource Center.

8.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Career Showcase:
This semester's Career Showcase will be held on January 24 and 25 from 9:00am-3:00pm in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center. Career Showcase features full-time job and internship opportunities being offered by a large variety of employers to UF students and alumni only. Day one is for non-technical fields such as healthcare, communications, education and sales, and day two is for technical fields such as computer science, engineering and information systems. Take advantage of this opportunity to make a BIG impact on your career. 9.	ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Sleights of Mind:
This Saturday we invite you to attend a special university-wide lecture titled "Sleights of Mind: the Neuroscience of Magic".  Here two distinguished neuroscientists (Stephen Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde) will explain what they've learned about how the brain works by studying magic and working with some of the world's great magicians. Their presentation will be entertaining, informative, and suitable for students and faculty from all disciplines. http://www.sleightsofmind.com/

The event is sponsored by HHMI, the Creativity in the Arts and Sciences Event, and the Analogous Thinking in the Arts and Sciences lecture series. The lecture will take place at the McKnight Brain Institute at 4:00pm this Saturday, January 21.

10.	JOB OPPORTUNITY: Work Study Student Position at CLS:

11.	SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: Presidential Service Award (NEW POSTING):
The Presidential Service Award recognizes those outstanding students who have volunteered over 100 hours in the last academic year between March 31, 2011 and March 13, 2012. Applications are now available and will be accepted until 5:00pm on Friday, February 24. Winners will be invited to a special award ceremony at the President's House on Campus on March 13 from 5:30-7:00pm. 12.	SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: 2012 University Women's Club Scholarships (NEW POSTING):
The University Women's Club awards scholarships each spring to undergraduate juniors and seniors. These awards are named in honor of the wives of past University of Florida Presidents and distinguished administrators. The requirements for consideration include full time enrollment at the University of Florida, current junior or senior status, a minimum of a 3.6 GPA, and participation in campus and/or community activities. In addition, there are two awards specifically designated for undergraduate or graduate students with a disability that are presented from the Rita O'Connell Scholarship Foundation.

All of the monetary awards recognize scholarship, leadership, and service to the university and/or community. This year each award will be $1,000.

Applications may be downloaded from the Dean of Students website at www.dso.ufl.edu/scholarships/ . Applications are due by 4:30pm on March 2. 

13.	SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: CLAS Dean's Office Scholarships:
There are just over 75 CLAS Dean's Office scholarships available with an award amount of $1,000 each: http://www.clas.ufl.edu/scholarships/clas.html

Students may only pick one scholarship to apply for. Winners will be notified by the end of the Spring semester and funds will be disbursed after drop/add in the fall. Please note that students who will not be registered for Fall classes are not eligible.


14.	SCHOLARSHIP / AWARD: Essay Contest on "The War on Cancer":
The James "Rhio" O'Connor Memorial Scholarship Fund is offering its scholarship again this year. It is an essay contest open to all college students. The essay subject concerns cancer, and the scholarships are $5,000 for first place, $2,000 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. 15.	STUDY ABROAD: Chinese Commerce and Culture Summer Program (NEW POSTING):
The UF in Beijing: Chinese Commerce and Culture program is a unique three hour credit course whereby students will learn about China's business environment and culture while also teaching Chinese university students American Culture and English. For their service teaching, students will be paid by Tsinghua University. It's an amazing opportunity that combines site visits to Chinese businesses and cultural sites, with a great leadership opportunity to teach university students at China's premiere university.

Program dates: May 14-25 in Gainesville; June 17-July 13 in Beijing. 

For business majors, this program also fulfills your WCBA internship requirement.

16.	RESEARCH: Summer Institute for Training Biostatistics at USF:
The Summer Institute for Training Biostatistics at the USF is a unique six-week living and studying experience on the Tampa campus of University of South Florida. Field visits to various healthcare service and research settings; hands-on training and lectures with top biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and clinicians; analyses of real data sets from landmark studies are all part of the Summer Institute. Up to four college credits will be transferred back to the participant's home institution. Furthermore tuition and fees, housing, food, and traveling are all paid for by the program. In addition, a wide variety of social events and activities are being planned to highlight Florida's educational and lifestyle experiences.

Students need to apply as soon as possible at www.health.usf.edu/sibs. There are only a select number of admissions, and the application deadline is March 15.

17.	RESEARCH: Creativity in the Arts and Sciences Event:
The UF-HHMI Science for Life Program and the College of Fine Arts invites you, your family, and friends to attend the 2012 Creativity in the Arts and Science Event (CASE) on Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom and the McGuire Pavilion at the University of Florida. CASE will feature science posters and art exhibits, including dance, musical, and theatre performances, as well as 2-D and 3-D works of art. Come support undergraduates from UF, Furman, LSU, and Emory. Discover the theories behind the students' works in the arts and sciences as they compete for the Science for Life Undergraduate Creativity Award. 

18.	LEADERSHIP: Black Student Leadership Conference:
Help build a legacy. Attend the 10th Annual James E. Scott Black Student Leadership Conference and explore the multifaceted world of leadership. Current and emerging leaders are encouraged to apply. 20.	VOLUNTEER: Florida Alternative Breaks Participant Applications:
Florida Alternative Breaks is still accepting participant applications for most spring break trips including Immigration, Hunger and Food Security, International Marine Life Conservation, and Environmental Conservation. If you are interested in applying, the application can be found here: http://www.leadershipandservice.ufl.edu/fab-dates.php.  

You can turn in your application to 301 Peabody Hall in the Center for Leadership and Service, and pay your deposit to Melissa at the front desk in order to secure your spot. Deposit amounts can be found on the participant application. Turn it in as soon as possible, as available spots are first come first serve. 

21.	VOLUNTEER: Public School Volunteers Needed:
While you're here, volunteer! Opportunities to volunteer in the local schools are available spring semester. You can register at Norman Hall in the Terrace Room on the following days: January 23 from 9:00am-2:00pm. You must also attend one of the following orientations - January 24 from 4:00-5:00pm at Gator Wesley or January 26 from 4:30-5:30pm at JJ Finley Elementary. Call 955-6760 for more info.

22.	VOLUNTEER: Sustainability Hut Training (TODAY):
If you are interested in environmental issues and passionate about sustainable living, then get involved with UF's Office of Sustainability!  We are looking for engaging volunteers to help run the Sustainability Hut, a moveable education tool that aims to educate UF students and staff about a variety of sustainability topics. Four training sessions will be held in Tigert 202 on Friday, January 20, from 10:40am-2:45pm. Students who are interested must pick one session to attend- each session begins at the UF class period for that hour (10:40am, 11:45am, 12:50pm, etc.). 23.	ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for Submissions - The Fine Print Literary Zine:
The Fine Print (http://www.thefineprintuf.org) is putting together a small collection of creative writing from local writers for publication this spring and will be accepting submissions until February 15.
 
Pieces can be submitted as attachments in -.DOC or other Word/Adobe compatible formats to [log in to unmask] Any form of creative fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or experimental narrative is welcome. Please make sure to include your name and contact information on each piece you submit.

24.	ANNOUNCEMENT: $5 MCAT, GRE, and LSAT Practice Tests:
Dance Marathon at UF is teaming up with Kaplan to provide $5 practice tests for the MCAT, GRE and LSAT on Saturday, January 21. Tests begin at 10:00am at various campus locations. All proceeds benefit the Shands Hospital for Children, our local Children's Miracle Network Hospital. To register, visit www.floridadm.org

25.	STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Creative Writing Club (NEW POSTING):
The Creative Writing Club will be having its first meeting of the semester on Tuesday, January 24 in Matherly room 151 from 4:00-5:00pm. We will introduce ourselves and review our aims for the year. 26.	STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity (NEW POSTING):
Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity's informational meeting will be held Tuesday, January 24, at 7:20pm in Turlington L007. 

Meet-and-greet at University Red Mango to follow. Welcome Week continues with free bowling at Reitz on Friday, January 27, 6:00-8:00pm.

Phi Alpha Delta is the largest law fraternity worldwide. PAD is co-ed; prominent members include Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, and members of Congress. Our chapter is the largest pre-legal organization on UF's campus. 
Each semester, we organize community service, host a law school symposium, organize socials, and hold meetings featuring guests who speak on a variety of law related issues. 

PAD is tabling in Turlington every day this week and next from 9:30am - 2:00pm. 

27.	STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: RSVP for Gender Roundtable Lunch Discussions:

28.	STUDENT ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCEMENT: Society for Viral Studies:
The Society for Viral Studies is holding its first general body meeting of the spring semester on Monday, January 23 at 5:15pm in Matherly 105. At this meeting we will give a brief introduction to our club, introduce you to old members, and hand out our schedule of events for the semester. 

As a club, we provide several research opportunities throughout the semester either through our own student-led research group, the Phage Project, or through the monthly speakers we bring to our meetings to discuss their topics of research, current issues in science, and the latest discoveries. We spread influenza and HPV vaccination awareness on campus and provide our members with many hands-on community service opportunities. We host several club socials and fundraisers throughout the semester and work at the UF athletics concession stands in order to raise money for our end of the year trips abroad. In the past we have visited medical schools, research facilities, hospitals, and more in Dominican Republic (2010), and Peru (2011). This year we are planning to go to Brazil.

31.	EVENT: Immigration Policy Forum (NEW POSTING):
Volunteers for International Student Affairs is hosting an Immigration Policy Forum on Tuesday, January 24 at 6:00pm in the Matthews Suite, 4th floor Reitz Union. 

Join the community for an in-depth workshop and discussion series on immigration law and its impact on the state of the nation. Introduction by Professor Iglesias, private attorney in immigration and criminal law. Ms Natalia Kalishman, Esq: "States' Immigration Law: In the Right Church, but the Wrong Pew?" Mr Robert Folsom, Esq: "Disconnected: Immigration and Local State Courts in Florida"

Ms. Kalishman is currently an attorney in private practice in Gainesville (Law Office of Steven Kalishman, PA) and Mr. Folsom is a staff attorney at the Alachua County Criminal Justice Center (8th Judicial Circuit) in Gainesville.

32.	EVENT: An Evening with Dr. Narendra Kini (NEW POSTING):
Dr. Narendra Kini is the President and CEO of Miami Children's Hospital, the only specialty children's hospital in South Florida. Hailed as a visionary leader, Dr. Kini is also board certified in pediatric emergency medicine. He will be coming to speak on Tuesday, January 24 at 7:00pm in the Graham Gallery. 34.	EVENT: Miss Representation Screening (NEW POSTING):
A screening of Miss Representation will take place on Tuesday, January 24 at 8:00pm in the Reitz Union Auditorium.

Miss Representation is a groundbreaking documentary that explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media's limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman. This is Florida's first screening of the documentary which was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Network and is acclaimed by critics. Read more and watch the trailer at http://missrepresentation.org/.
