Hey everyone,

I decided to do a little birding this morning to celebrate the Ides; or maybe I just had a little free time to feed my addiction? Whatever the case, I had an enjoyable time at Leu Gardens this morning. I arrived just after 10 AM and stayed until a little past 1 PM. Birds were very active:

Wood Duck
Mallard
Wood Stork (1)
Double-Crested Cormorant
Anhinga
Brown Pelican (1)
Great Egret
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
Osprey (pair mating right by the boardwalk overlooking Lake Rowena)
Bald Eagle (2)
Red-Tailed Hawk
Common Gallinule
American Coot (2, I believe my first ever coots at Leu)
Mourning Dove
Barred Owl (1)
Belted Kingfisher
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker (3)
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Pileated Woodpecker
White-Eyed Vireo (1)
Blue-Headed Vireo (3)
Blue Jay
Fish Crow
Tufted Titmouse
Carolina Wren
House Wren (3)
Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher
Ruby-Crowned Kinglet (4)
Hermit Thrush (1, the sonic treat of the morning: after I got great looks, the bird flew off out of sight, and then began singing a couple minutes later - reminded me of my college summer days helping with bird research in northeastern Minnesota. Ah, nostalgia!)
Gray Catbird (8-9)
Northern Mockingbird
Brown Thrasher
Cedar Waxwing (50-60)
Black-and-White Warbler (1)
Orange-Crowned Warbler (1)
American Redstart (1 female, my FOS)
Northern Parula (8-9)
Palm Warbler (4)
Pine Warbler (2)
Yellow-Rumped Warbler (20-25)
Prairie Warbler (1)
Northern Cardinal
Red-Winged Blackbird
Common Grackle
Boat-Tailed Grackle
American Goldfinch (1)

Notably absent today were Red-Shouldered Hawk, Eastern Phoebe and House Finch. Also, I thought I may get my FOS Great Crested Flycatcher today, but perhaps next week... I'm excited for Chimney Swifts to be over Downtown Orlando again soon!

Leu Gardens is located near the intersection of US-17/92 (Mills Ave.) and Virginia Ave. in a northern section of Downtown Orlando, Orange County. There is an entrance fee for non-members.

Good birding,

John Thomton
Orlando, Orange Co.
