Hello Richard:
What you are suggesting is that mothers who drown their children might make
rational decisions as to the method they will use to kill the people they
love. Of course you are right. Only an incredibly stupid detective would
fail to consider alternate possibilities--especially in trying to figure out
a psychological profile. However, there is enough peculiarity in the
problem we are discussing to arouse the suspicions of the most mediocre
detective. We have loads of evidence that dreams are disguised fulfillment
of suppressed wishes. We have evidence that psychotic acts are disguised
fulfillment of suppressed wishes. We have evidence that women's impulses to
drown their children are psychotic in origin. We have evidence that dreams
of drowned children are widespread among normal women. In addition, we are
aware that women seldom kill their children, but when they do, it is often
by drowning. Also we are aware that men who are NOT psychotic are much more
likely to kill their children, or any other person they love, than are
psychotic women. Also, we are aware that men who kill their beloved,
whether that belovedis a child or adult, seldom, if ever, drown them, but
are very likely to shoot, stab, strangle, burn, suffocate or beat their
loved ones to death.
Yours,
Larry D. Lyons
