Hi,
My name is Matt Andrews, I am 17, and I live in St. Louis Missouri. I
will be taking aweek long family vacation to Captiva Island during the last
week in March, which now is only about a couple of weeks away. I have never
birded in Florida before and anticipate seeing many lifers. I would greatly
appreciate it if anyone who knows anything about the questions below could
write me back and help me.
1. First I would like to know if Caracara can be seen anywhere north of Ft.
Myers along I-75, also are Western Kingbirds frequently seen along this
road???
2. I have heard that the Eurasian Widgeons are still being seen at Eagle
Lakes Park, but I would like to know if the Bronzed Cowbirds are still being
seen there, and also some specific directions would be appreciated.
3. Can anyone give me specific directions to the best place/places to find
Burrowing Owl in Cape Coral/Ft. Myers???
4. I know these birds are seen in the area of Ft. Myers and Sanibel/Captiva,
but I would like to know if they would be present, and in what
concentrations, at the time of year in which I will be there. I am under the
assumption that the last week in march would be a transition time in the
species in Florida, and I am not at all familiar with the migration timing of
the birds in Florida.
Northern Gannet
Prothonotary Warbler
Hooded Warbler
Cape May Warbler
Black Throated Blue Warbler
Grasshopper Sparrow
Lincoln’s Sparrow
Swallow-Tailed Kite
Stilt Sandpiper
American Avocet
Black Whiskered Vireo
Mangrove Cuckoo
Gray Kingbird
5. Are Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary or Ding Darling at all reliable for these
species during this time???
Clapper Rail
King Rail
Sora
Least Bittern
Limpkin
Purple Gallinule
6. Are there any reliable places for these species in Lee County (Sanibel,
Captiva, Ft. Myers, Cape Coral etc. where I will be doing most of my
birding), at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, or Lake Trafford???
Snail Kite
Short Tailed Hawk
Fulvous Whistling Duck
Black Bellied Whistling Duck
Gull Billed Tern
Smooth Billed Ani
Shiny Cowbird
7. And lastly is there any chance and what is that chance of seeing these
species off Captiva in the Gulf during/before/after inclement weather.
Parasitic Jaeger
Pomarine Jaeger
Cory’s Shearwater
Greater Shearwater
Wilson’s Storm Petrel
Sooty Tern
Bridled Tern
Masked Booby
Brown Booby
Brown Noddy
Thank you all so much for bearing with me. Any information you can give me
about the questions above would be greatly appreciated. This could make the
difference between a lot of lifers for me. I look forward to visiting and
thanks again!
