For those who are still interested in getting an FCC Amateur (ham) Radio operator license, there will be one more brief review session tonight (Friday 2/3), and a regularly scheduled exam on Saturday February 4th.
Congratulations to two CCC list members who passed the exam Jan 14th and are now 2 out of 39 new Technician class Amateur Radio Operators!
What is ham radio?

Why would CCC’ers be interested?
Ham radio is a technical hobby with a wide variety of interests and applications. New digital radios are available for long-distance transmission of data over radio. Some of the networks and repeater controller gateways require experts in Linux, networking, and data transmission protocols. Many software applications exist for ham radio applications including alternative methods for delivering email (Winlink, DSTAR), instant messages (PSK31,APRS,DSTAR), pictures (DSTAR/DRATS), GPS coordinates (APRS, DSTAR), and internet/web traffic (DSTAR). Other applications make use of the internet to enhance communications links (DSTAR, EchoLink, IRLP), visualize radio propagation (spectrum analyzer display), and identify specific frequency of active radio operators (DX spotting). There are even completely software defined radios (SDR) such as a FLEX-1 that use a black-box for the radio and your computer displays a virtual interface of knobs, dials, buttons, switches, LED lights, frequency display, presets, and memory channels.
