hi Bob - this reminds me of an experience I had years ago near our old
house in Marietta GA. On a trail in the woods I came upon a Wood duck and
Pileated woodpecker, very high in a pine, fighting over a prized hole. The
odd thing was that I had never seen a Wood duck at the subdivision pond not
far from the woods. And Pileated's aren't as common up here as down in
Florida. I came home and told my husband the exciting story. When we returned
the next day to check on the tree, I couldn't spot it! The tree had
toppled overnight and we walked up to the hole they had been fighting over.

Late this afternoon I walked through Olustee Battlefield
in search of birds for my year list (FOY Swallow-tailed Kite
Summer Tanager Eastern Wood Pewee). On my way out
I noticed two largish birds perched on a branch high up in
a pine. They turned out to be a pair of Wood Ducks. Several
hundred yards down the road I found six more Woodies on
the ground right at the interface between the recently burned
woods and the grassy area. What's odd about this is that the
nearest water is about one mile away. There aren't even any
rain pools or damp spots as there has been no rain to speak
of for a few weeks. There is no swampy or wet areas anywhere
near this location.
