This isn't easily correctible via HTML, since how the link is displayed is
a function of the browser. most browsers display links in a different
color and underlined. I know that with Netscape, one can toggle off the
underlining of links. But that's not necessarily true with other browsers,
and there's no standard HTML method for changing browser settings.
(Not that I'd recommend doing it if there were...)

 Obviously the person viewing it could view the source code, but that
 isn't something I want to explain to the "public." I realize that
 alternatively I could provide the email as plain text next to the link,
 but that doesn't seem very efficient.

That really is the best solution. The alternative is to force whoever has
the underscore in their username to change their name, then set-up a mail
alias for the old username to point to the new one. Annoying and of
course, more work...
