Writing Coordinator, Learning Center (full-time, twelve month appointment)

GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION:
With the Director, the Writing Coordinator coordinates the daily
activities, operation, and development of the Learning Center, including
assistance in the recruitment, training, supervision, evaluation,
and certification of student peer tutors (which requires some weekend
and late evening hours). The Writing Coordinator offers one-on-one and
group tutorial instruction in English composition, teaches one course
per year, and assists the Director in consultation with the faculty and
staff to improve writing across the curriculum.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
M.A. in English, English Literature, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics,
Comparative Literature, Composition and Rhetoric, or closely related
equivalent; a minimum of three years teaching composition at the
post-secondary level; familiarity with contemporary theories of
composition and rhetoric; proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power
Point, Internet, and email systems; exceptionally strong oral and written
communication skills; and the ability to work well with a variety of
constituencies in a small college environment.
QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:
Prior experience working in academic support services at the
post-secondary level; demonstrated experience with College Reading and
Learning Association (CRLA) tutor certification; prior administrative
experience developing programs; experience teaching reading, learning,
time management, test taking, and study skills; familiarity with
business and/or technical writing; outstanding organizational skills;
demonstrated knowledge and application of section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973; experience developing and maintaining html
web site; experience as an instructor of ESL; demonstrated research
skills; ability to remain effective in a challenging work environment;
and a good sense of humor!
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES:
Assist both the Director and student tutors with the development of
instructional and promotional materials; create training materials for
CRLA certification training; research writing and writing-related
methodologies; implement and oversee efficient data base for the
Learning Center; assess and place incoming students in skill appropriate
composition classes;
develop and maintain office resource library; manage tutor payroll and
evaluation records; coordinate Center's work and social functions;
design and teach Learning Center courses; conduct bi-annual faculty
writing workshops; and mentor college students.
