About the Conference

The Conference on Youth and Violence was developed by the Institute for
Psychoanalysis to bridge the gap between people who intervene in the lives of
troubled youth every day and researchers from across the country who are
conducting groundbreaking work in the area of youth violence.  The goal of this
conference is to create an opportunity for everyone who works with youth to
share new information, to establish linkages with each other and the broader
community, and to reinforce the community's effort to address youth violence.
Target Audience

This program was designed for people in the community who work with young people
at risk.  These include:

About the Speakers…

Elijah Anderson, Ph.D. is the Charles and William L. Day Professor of Social
Sciences
and Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania whose work on gangs
and gang-related violence has implications for a wide range of urban
professionals. Dr. Anderson's  latest book, Code of the Street: Decency,
Violence, and the Moral Life of the Ghetto continues his outstanding research
into the inner life of gang members.

Carl Bell, M.D. is President & C.E.O. Community Mental Health Council &
Foundation Inc., and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health at the
University of Illinois, Chicago. He is also involved with several research
projects on prevention of high risk youth behaviors.

Barbara T. Bowman is the President and one of the three faculty founders of the
Erikson Institute. She  has worked for over four decades to improve and expand
the education of practitioners who work with young children. Ms. Bowman will
participate in the panel on "The Young Violent Offender."

John Callaway is the award winning, former host of WTTW's Chicago Tonight
program.
Mr. Callaway will serve as moderator for the Public Forum "Youth and Violence: A
Town Meeting"

Bertram Cohler, Ph.D. is the William Rainey Harper Professor, Social Science
College Division; Professor in the Psychology, Education, and Psychiatry
Departments, and Divinity School, at the University of Chicago.

Bernadine Dohrn is Director of the Children and Family Justice Center of
Northwestern University School of Law. Ms. Dohrn's work has focused on how laws
can be effectively and humanely constructed to address the problems associated
with youth violence.

Robert M. Galatzer-Levy, M.D. is a psychoanalyst of children, adolescents and
adults on the faculty of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. His latest
book is titled Does Psychoanalysis Work?

Steven Marans, Ph.D. is the Harris Assistant Professor of Child Psychoanalysis,
Director of the Child Development Community Policing Program and the National
Center for Children Exposed to Violence at the Yale Child Study Center. Dr.
Marans is also a faculty member of the Western New England Institute for
Psychoanalysis. His research and writing explore the role of aggression and
violence on human development, the diagnosis and treatment of trauma and the
control of impulses throughout the life cycle.

Patrick T.  Murphy is the Cook County Public Guardian and represents abused and
neglected children in the Juvenile Court of Cook County.  Mr. Murphy has
published two books, "Our Kindly Parent the State" and "The Failure of the Child
Welfare System and the Plight of America's Unwanted Children."  Mr. Murphy will
participate in the panel discussion on "The Young Violent Offender."

Joy Osofsky, Ph.D. a psychoanalyst with the Louisiana State University, Medical
Center, Pediatrics Department, is one of the country's leading researchers in
infant development and interventions for "at risk" populations. Her work with
impoverished minority families on parenting has allowed her to study the impact
of early deprivation on later violence and intervention to help control these
effects.

Robert S. Pynoos, M.D. is Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Trauma
Psychiatry Program at the UCLA School of Medicine. He is an internationally
recognized authority on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and traumatic bereavement
in children and adolescents. He has been at the forefront of developing
school-based mental health services for children and adolescents after violence
and disaster.

Michael Rohan is the Director of Probation Court Services for the Juvenile
Justice Center of Cook County. Mr. Rohan will participate in the panel on "The
Young Violent  Offender."

David C. Rowe, Ph.D. is Professor of Family Studies and Genetics at the
University of Arizona. He received his A.B. in Social Relations from Harvard
University and his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Colorado. Rowe's
training in behavioral genetics at the University of Colorado led to a career
interest in twin and adoption studies. Dr. Rowe has investigated a variety of
characteristics, including shyness, intelligence, delinquency, and
fertility-related behaviors.

Catherine M. Ryan is the Director of the Juvenile Justice Bureau of the Illinois
State's Attorney's Office. Ms. Ryan will participate in the panel on "The Young
Violent Offender."

Mark D. Smaller, Ph.D., is Chair of the American Psychoanalytic Association
Public Forums and the Committee on Social Issues. He is a faculty Member of the
Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis.  He is currently writing a book on
parenting, producing a PBS documentary, "Speaking of Talking," and has
recently appeared on numerous local and national news talk shows regarding youth
and violence.

Charles B. Strozier, Ph.D. is Professor of History, John Jay College and the
Graduate Center, City University of New York where he co-directs the Center on
Violence and Human Survival, and is a practicing psychoanalyst in New York. He
is author of Apocalypse: On the Psychology of Fundamentalism in America.  His
latest book,  Heinz Kohut: His Life and Work will be out in the fall of 2000.

Patrick Tolan, Ph.D. is Acting Director of the Institute for Juvenile Research,
Department of Psychiatry, University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Tolan conducts
prevention research trials and longitudinal risk studies focused on families and
youth of urban communities. He is a regular contributor to the research
literature on prevention, violence, and youth development. He also consults
regularly to state and federal agencies and foundations on efforts to understand
and prevent youth violence.

Paul G. Vallas, is the Chief Executive Officer of the Chicago Public Schools,
the third largest school district in the U.S.  Mr. Vallas is responsible for the
administration and implementation of education and management reform. He was
recently awarded the National Education Excellence Award, National Conference
for Community and Justice.  Mr. Vallas will participate as a panelist in the
Public Forum, Youth and Violence: A Town Meeting.

About the Conference Locations:

Chicago Cultural Center
The main conference will be held at the Chicago Cultural Center in the Preston
Bradley Hall. The Center is located at 78 E. Washington St. ( At Michigan Ave. &
Washington St.)
The Center is wheelchair accessible at the 77 East Randolph entrance. Please use
the ramp or pedway elevator. ASL is available if needed (please indicate this on
the registration form).

Discussion Group Locations
The discussion groups will be held at either the Chicago Institute for
Psychoanalysis or the DePaul College of Law. The room assignments for group
discussions will be made available on the day of the conference to all
participants.  Please be sure and check in early.

The Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis is located at 122 South Michigan Suite
1300. (At Michigan Ave. & Adams St.)

The DePaul College of Law is located at 25 East Jackson.  (Between State St. and

Friday Evening Dinner
The Friday evening dinner will be held at the Standard Club of Chicago. The Club
is located at 320 S. Plymouth Court.  (Between State St. and Dearborn St.) The
dinner can be purchased separately or as a part of the entire conference
program.  The Standard Club has a policy requiring business attire for those who
wish to attend the dinner event.

Continuing education will be offered to:

Physicians: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with
the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the American
Psychoanalytic Association and the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. The
American Psychoanalytic Association is accredited by the ACCME to provide
continuing education for physicians and takes responsibility for the content,
quality and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

The American Psychoanalytic Association designates each activity for a maximum
of 14 hours in category 1 credit towards the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.
Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he or she actually
spent in the educational activity.

Psychologists: The Institute is approved by the American Psychological
Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. The Institute for
Psychoanalysis maintains responsibility for this program.
