Following is a long list of case scenarios that I use.  I have the tutors pull these slips of paper out of an envelop and ask how they would respond.  It can create some great discussion and pulls the tutor training together at the end.  I have gathered these examples from many sources.

You are working as a Lab Assistant or Grader for a professor who teaches a class you tutored last semester. He has said that it would be OK to continue tutoring; however you realize that you will have access to "inside information", such as tests and projects. How do you handle this potential conflict of interest.?



You have scheduled a long, three hour session with one of your TRIO students on Saturday from 11:00 - 2:00. The student begins to get tired about halfway through and suggests that you both continue your tutoring session at Wendy's where you can get something to eat and drink. How do you respond?



You are tutoring several students who are friends. However, you tutor them individually rather than as a group. Carolyn asked you how Mark did on his last exam. He made a 98 while you know that Carolyn only made a 65. How do you respond?




A student has asked you if would be OK to borrow all of your materials from the class you are helping him with. These materials include projects, papers, notes, and old tests. How do you respond?



One of your regular students from last semester who is not a TRIO participant has asked you to tutor a math course. You are very busy this semester and tell the student that you will have to think about it. The student says, "Hey, I'm really in a desperate situation.*  How do you respond?



You had forgotten to ask a new student what you would be working on in your tutorial session. When you arrive, you discover that your tutee has brought a take home exam. How do you help the student without working on the exam?



You have a student who tries to get you to do his homework in a subtle way. He asks you to work #15, #20, #23, #30 and #45, and question #30.  You discover that this is the whole homework assignment. How do you respond? How could this have been avoided?
ASC has a policy that tutors should not edit a student's work. The problem of editing vs. tutoring is faced in writing and computer science courses among others. What constitutes editing? How do you avoid editing a student's work?



You feel that your student does not have a chance of passing this course, but the tutee is hopeful and asks you innocently, "Do you think I'll make it?" How do you respond?



One of your students has been openly ridiculed in class by one of his professors. What would you advise him to do?



Student is not a TRIO participant, but wants two hours of tutoring per week.



You have been working with four students who are in the same class.  You find that you are repeating yourself four times and that you are running short on time.  What are your choices.


Student wants study skills information.



Student brings you a problem you don*t know how to solve.



The student is passive and contributes little to the session.



You feel frustrated or impatient with your student.



The student is finding school too difficult.



The student doesn*t speak English well enough to be understood.



The student doesn*t tend to do homework.




The student wants to move ahead and do homework for which he or she is not ready.



The student feels hopeless.



The student flirts with you or has a crush on you.



The student is consistently late or absent.



The student doesn*t seem to like you.



The student blames you for bad grades.

A student who sees you as a friend and proceeds to confide very personal
problems to the detriment of tutoring.



A student who only wants tutoring at the last moment before a big assignment is due.



A student who keeps saying, *I don*t understand* no matter how many times and ways you explain.



A student that is very negative and says that college is too hard.




A student who fails the exam and blames the professor.




A student who will not complete an assignment without checking every single step with you.
