There are many exemplary developmental programs in community colleges, of
course, but one that comes to mind, since there was recently a nationally
broadcast, live teleconference on "Developmental Education: Best Practices
and Exemplary Programs," is Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst, NC.
This program won the most recent John Champaign Memorial Award for
Outstanding Developmental Education Program, which was conferred at the NADE
conference in Biloxi last spring. Susanne Adams, director of the program,
served on the telecast panel, and spoke to some of their practices very
eloquently. To contact Susanne, e-mail her at

While in Dallas, moderating the panel for the telecast, I had the
opportunity to visit the nearby campus of Richland College of the Dallas
County Community College District. I was quite impressed by their program,
too, as well as by the fact that the president, Dr. Stephen Mittelstet, was
extremely knowledgeable of the programs and took time to show us around and
describe what happened in each area of the developmental program. For more
information about their program, you can contact Dean Mary K. Darin, Dean of
the Human and Academic Development Division, at [log in to unmask] .
