This is probably not exactly what you are looking for, but have you every
thought about the official papal title, pontifex maximus? It is 'top
bridgebuilder'. For popes, I think it was meant to indicate a bridge between
heaven and earth. But before being applied to popes, the term was used for
roman emperors, starting with julius caesar, a big builder himself. Before
that, I think it was a babylonian religious title, but you'd have to look
that up.
