Hello listers...
Long time lister and lurker here. Just thought i'd add my 2 cents to
the Smarthinking discussion... given that they're one of my
employers.. :) Between Burck and Jelaine you've got a pretty
good overview of the program...and btw, nice description, jelaine..
What i'd like to add to it is a bit of information about the tutors. I've
been with Smarthinking as a lead statistics and math e-structor for
almost a year and a half and know many of the other e-structors
(on a virtual basis of course, but with several good 'real' friendships
as well). I believe i'm correct in saying that the majority of the
estructors are college and university level instructors, professors,
and even the ocassional department chair. We also have a few
high school teachers, and perhaps a couple of grad students as
well, but it's primarily college level faculty. I've got to say the level
of experience and expertise amongst the group is incredible.. both
pedogogically and personality-wise, which is a definite factor in on-
line interaction. I've researched many online tutoring sites over the
years and as far as i can tell, there simply is not, nor has there
been, a program or platform that compares to Smarthinking. I
recommend it to my own students (altho only when either myself or
our learning ctr is not available) and have absolutely no hesitation
in recommending it to anyone else.
This is not a sales pitch, honest... i unfortunately don't get a
commission per student or per anything else... :) but just a bit of
additional information for anyone who may have questions or
concerns. It's simply a wonderful additional resource for students,
and isn't that all that matters?
I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone might have, and hope
this has been useful to anyone checking out online resources.
And back to lurk mode.. :) By the way, this is a great list and i
thank all of you for your years of advise and suggestions.
