Florida's chief information officer, Roy Cales, turned himself in to
authorities Aug. 30 after they issued a warrant for his arrest for grand
theft stemming from a 1996 incident. He resigned his post the same day.
Cales, 39, had been on administrative leave with pay since July 18 while the
Leon County Sheriff's Office investigated the charge.

BATON ROUGE -- New Orleans Assessor Patricia Johnson must turn over her
financial records to the legislative auditor, a Baton Rouge judge ruled
Thursday.
State District Judge J. Michael McDonald gave Johnson, assessor for the 1st
Municipal District, until Sept. 14 to gather her office records, including
bank and payroll statements. Johnson also must be available to meet with the
auditor's staff by Oct. 1, McDonald said.

Sheriff Jerry Keller said Thursday he will erase the work-card records of
people no longer required to have them but not until a plan for the
time-consuming and potentially costly project is approved.
Metro Police will offer several plans within two weeks to the Las Vegas City
Council and Clark County Commission. Metro Police, which has long maintained
the work-card records, is funded by the city of Las Vegas and Clark County.

A California woman has filed a lawsuit against an independent record label
for embedding technology in CDs that blocks people from listening to songs
on a computer.
The suit, filed in California Superior Court in Marin County, alleges that
Denver, Colo.-based Fahrenheit Entertainment misled consumers by failing to
include an adequate disclaimer on CDs encoded with digital
copyright-protection software.

The House of Jacob's stained glass windows haven't seen the light of day in
39 years, much like a chandelier from the Titanic buried under the ocean
floor.
But the windows might soon have sun streaming through their colored panes
just as sunken treasures from the Titanic have been brought to the ocean's
surface.
The 32 stained glass windows were brought over from Germany in 1920 and put
in the newly built Temple Israel, the reform synagogue that closed in 1962
and became the Red Door Senior Center.

A small southeastern California city, trying to capitalize on the high
Internet connection rate of its residents, plans to offer a suite of
e-government initiatives beginning next year.
"I wanted people to able to get online and do business with the city so they
didn't have to come into City Hall Monday through Friday, 8 to 5," said Don
White, assistant city manager for Laguna Hills. White said surveys revealed
that the city of 33,000 has a 79 percent household Internet connectivity
