Chem-E-Car Competitions
2002 Regional Student Conferences
2002 Annual Student Conference
Teams of students will design and construct a vehicle powered solely by
chemical reaction. The cars will carry a specified cargo a given distance
and stop. A combined score for (1) traveling the correct distance, and (2)
creativity will determine the winner.  Please note: An updated set of

National Student Paper Competition
2002 Annual Student Conference
The First Place winners from each of the ten Regional Student Paper
Competitions will compete during
the AIChE Annual Student Conference.

Regional Student Paper Competition
Spring, 2002
Students present technical papers at ten Regional Student Conferences held
each spring across the country. The First Place
winner from each region presents their research at the National Student
Paper Competition at the Annual Student Conference.

Ted Peterson Student Paper Award
April 15, 2002
Recognizes the published work of a graduate or undergraduate student on the
application of computing and systems
 technology to chemical engineering. Sponsored by AIChE's Computing and
Systems Technology (CAST) Division.

Minority Scholarship Award for Incoming College Freshmen
April 15, 2002
Applicants must be high school graduates during the 2002-2003 academic year
and plan to enroll during the
2002-2003 academic year in an accredited four-year university offering a
major in chemical engineering. Applicants must plan to study courses leading
to a chemical engineering degree, and must be a member of a minority group
that is under-represented in chemical engineering. Application forms are
available on AIChE's Web site.

April 15, 2002
Applicants must be AIChE national student members at the time of nomination,
undergraduates in chemical engineering
during the 2002-2003 academic year, and a member of a minority group that is
under-represented in chemical engineering

Minority Affairs Committee Award for Outstanding Scholastic Achievement
April 15, 2002
Recognizes outstanding achievements by a chemical engineering student who
serves as a role model for minority students.

OUTSTANDING STUDENT CHAPTER WEBSITE AWARD
May 1, 2002
Sponsored by Koch Industries.  Recognizes excellent web pages created and
published by AIChE Student Chapters.  Selection criteria include:
effectiveness of communication (clarity, humor, and presentation), content,

Donald F. & Mildred Topp Othmer National Scholarship Award
May 7, 2002
Each student chapter advisor may nominate one member from their chapter for
one of fifteen $1,000 awards.   The scholarship is based on academic
performance and AIChE activity.

Safety and Chemical Engineering Education (SACHE) Essay Award
June 2, 2002
Presented to the two best essays on the topic of chemical process safety.

Outstanding Student Chapter Advisor Award
June 1, 2002
Presented to a chapter advisor for a job well done. Any AIChE member can
nominate an advisor.

AICHE SAFETY AND HEALTH DIVISION SAFETY AWARD
June 4, 2002
Safety and Health Division will award four $500 awards for individuals or
teams with the best application of the concepts of "inherent" safety in
their National Student Design Competition solutions.  These awards are part
of the normal submission of the AIChE Student Design Problem solution.  More

National Student Design Competition
June 4, 2002
Each year, chemical engineers devise a student problem that typifies a real
chemical engineering design situation. Student  teams and individuals submit
solutions. To order competition handbooks, contact the AIChE call center at
(800) 242.4363.

Donald F. Othmer Sophomore Academic Excellence Award
June 25, 2002
Advisors nominate one member per student chapter. This award honors the
student chapter member who has attained the highest grade point average at
the end of their sophomore year.

Outstanding Student Chapter Award
July 1, 2002
Nominations may be made by any AIChE member or student member. Chapters are
recognized for their enthusiasm, program quality, participation,
professionalism, and community involvement.

SACHE Student Design Competition for Safety in Design
July 1, 2002
SACHE will present an award for the National Student Design Competition
entry which best incorporates the concepts of process safety. This entry
does not have to be the First Place team or individual entry to win.

AICHE PROCESS DEVELOPMENT DIVISION STUDENT PAPER AWARD
July 15, 2002
Sponsor: Eli Lilly and Co.  Description & Selection Criteria: Presented to a
full-time graduate or undergraduate student who prepares the best technical
paper to describe the results of process development related studies within
chemical engineering. Selection criteria include: 1. Papers will be judged
primarily on technical merit. The student must demonstrate depth and breadth
of knowledge in the subject. 2. The work presented must be carried out while
the student is enrolled at a university with an accredited chemical
engineering program. 3. The student must be the primary author (faculty
advisors may be co-authors). 4. The paper must describe original research
(experimental, numerical, or theoretical) or design; papers consisting of
literature reviews are not permitted. 5. The paper must be suitable for
publication in a refereed journal. 6. The student must be a member of AIChE.

Environmental Division Undergraduate Student Paper Award
September 2, 2002
Awarded to an undergraduate student for the best original paper based on
research related to the environment.

Environmental Division Graduate Student Paper Award
September 2, 2002
Recognizes outstanding graduate student contributions to environmental
protection through chemical engineering.

Nuclear Engineering Division Student Award
December 1, 2002
Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student for the best original paper
on nuclear-related studies in chemical engineering.
