You might start with Marsden's review
Marsden, Peter V, 1990: Network data and measurement. Annual Review of
Sociology 16, 435-463.
An important detail would be, whether you collect data on ego-centered
networks or whole networks. Ego-centered network analysis usually has
more options to measure tie strength.
