THE MADELYN LOCKHART DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIP
The Association for Academic Women (AAW) at the University of Florida has
established the Madelyn Lockhart Fellowship to honor an outstanding female
graduate student. One or more Fellowships in an amount of up to $2,000 will
be awarded to assist in the dissertation phase of the doctoral degree. The
recipient must be enrolled in dissertation credits the semester (or summer)
she receives the fellowship.
This award has been established to recognize Dr. Madelyn Lockhart, who
served as Dean of the Graduate School and Dean of International Studies and
Programs from 1985 to 1993 (and also as associate dean 1981 to 1985, and
assistant dean 1973 to 1977 and 1979 to 1981), and who aided students in
many ways, including implementation of a fellowship program to assist
students working on their dissertations.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
The applicant must be a full-time or full-time equivalent doctoral degree
candidate (as defined by the Graduate School
http://gradschool.rgp.ufl.edu/education/faq.html ) at the University of
Florida who has completed her doctoral course work. She should also have
passed the qualifying exam and be ready to write her dissertation.
Preference will be given to women in the later stages of their dissertation
research.
A nomination can come from a faculty member or from the candidate herself,
and are welcome from candidates in any Ph.D. program.
The application must include;
1. A three to five page proposal describing the dissertation, its
importance and its relevance to the field of study ·
2. Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the
committee chair that indicates the applicant's progress toward the degree
3· An official graduate transcript
4· Current vitae
[Note: The dissertation proposal must be approved by the applicant's
graduate committee prior to submitting an application.]
Deadline for applications for the award is March 15. The award will be
presented at the women's history month celebration on March 25, 2003 in the
Arredondo Room of the Reitz Union at 5:30 p.m.
AWARD SELECTION AND PROCEDURES
A committee will evaluate the applications. Committee members are
selected by the Executive Committee of AAW and the director of Women's
Studies and they will represent the physical and social sciences,
humanities, and professional programs. The fellowship awardee must
demonstrate both achievement and promise in her chosen field.
