NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Competition Announced

The National Science Foundation (NSF) will award approximately 900 new
Graduate Research Fellowships, including awards offered for women in
engineering and computer and information science.

Fellowships are awarded for graduate study leading to research-based
master's or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, mathematics, and
engineering supported by the NSF. Applicants must be citizens, nationals, or
permanent resident aliens of the United States at the time of application.

Each three-year fellowship provides a stipend of $27,500 for 12-month

The NSF welcomes applications from all qualified science, mathematics, or
engineering students and strongly encourages women, minorities, and persons
with disabilities to compete fully in this program.
Awards will be announced in late March 2004. The NSF contracts with Oak
Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) to provide the support services for
this prestigious fellowship program.

ORAU is a university consortium leveraging the scientific strength of 86
major research institutions to advance science and education by partnering
with national laboratories, government agencies, and private industry. ORAU
manages the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for the U.S.
Department of Energy.

November 5, 2003:       Engineering, Mathematical Sciences, Geosciences
November 6, 2003:       Social Sciences, Computer and Information Science
and Engineering, Psychology, Chemistry
