The Honors Daily Opportunities List is an official UF e-publication sent to
all students who entered UF as an honors student.  Opportunities listed

Society is in need of a webmaster. This is a volunteer position. The
Micanopy Museum is a rustic local museum on the Main St. in this charming
town founded in 1821 (10 miles south of Gainesville on Highway 441). They
host about 5,000 visitors annually from around Florida, the US and the
world, many of whom find the museum on the website at
They are looking for a volunteer with web skills to update the site. It is a
very interesting opportunity for someone in History or Museum Studies or
related majors with computer skills. For info call Patricia Crass, Museum

2. PROCTOR ORAL HISTORY INTERNSHIP: 1. There will be ONE internship
available in spring semester. 2. Preference would be for juniors or seniors
in the Honors Program who have a specific project in mind or who want to
develop their skills in oral history. (Great opportunity for a history or
journalism major.) 3. The student selected for the internship would earn 3
hours under the IDH 4940 rubric and the final grade will be S-U. 4. The
student would be required to:
1. Work approximately eight hours a week (a flexible schedule is acceptable)
and assist the program with research, editing and work on the catalog.
2. Read appropriate literature about how to do oral history.
3. Conduct at least two interviews of the student's choice, and then
transcribe, audit-edit and do a final edit on each interview.
4. Write a formal paper/critique of the student's experiences.
5. All written work will be evaluated by the Director of the Oral History

In exchange for working in the oral history office, we will teach the intern
about how the program operates, the intricacies in conducting an interview,
the skill of transcribing and audit-editing and in general, the importance
of oral history. We believe that the experience would be beneficial for any
student and the acquired skills would assist them in their graduate work or
in their chosen profession. This internship is a rare opportunity to learn

3.  SHO'S RCA Karaoke Night: Want to embarrass your RCA (or any RCA)?  Come
to SHO's
RCA Karaoke tonight at 7 PM in Hume Commons.  For $1, you can make any RCA
sing any song  you want!  The money raised will go towards the little girl
is sponsoring in Haiti.

Ready for exams? Well neither is the SHO executive board, so come on down
and enjoy some nice stress relief with a massage, a donut, and a coloring
book! There will be tons of donuts, 4 masseuses, and tons of stress
relieving activities!

5. VIDEO PRODUCTION CLASS SCREENING: This is a free screening of new work
from the Fall 2003 Video Production Class. Each video is approximately ten
minutes long and the subjects span a broad range. The screening will take
place at seven o'clock PM in the Harn Museum Auditorium on Tuesday Dec. 9.

6. MEET AND GREET FOR HONORS AMBASSADORS: It has come to our attention in HA
that many people think there is a meet n greet for prospective members THIS
Tuesday the 9th in Hume 119. This is due to an incorrect flyer posted in the
honors office and was neglected when we did corrections. The next meet n
greet will be January 7th at 7pm in the Matthews lounge of the Reitz Union,
and that there is NO Meet N Greet the 9th--it was held last week. Sorry for
the confusion.  All of the HA dates for recruitment are located on our

Earn UF credit while participating in unique study experiences with
professors of distinction! There will be a meeting for all students
interested in study abroad in Paris at the UF Paris Research Center
Wednesday, December 10th at 4pm in 260 Florida Gym. The information session
will cover SPRING BREAK programs, MAY programs and SUMMER A and B programs.

8. SUMMER STUDY IN PROVENCE INFO SESSION: There will be a UF in Provence
information session next Thursday, December 11th at 4pm in 260 Florida Gym.
Spend six weeks studying abroad in the South of France. (You don't need to
be a French major to participate in this program. What a great location! SKD

9. MOSCOW SUMMER STUDY ABROAD:   On Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6 pm in room 2328,
Turlington Hall, Dr. Alex Burak and Dr. James Goodwin will be conducting the
second Moscow 2004 Summer Program orientation meeting to discuss the program
and its curriculum. Students from last summer will be present to offer their
insights and personal experiences.

10. REGISTER NOW for the 17th Annual Women's Leadership Conference on
February 8th, 2004! This year's conference will feature special speaker
Charlotte Mathers, UF's first female student government president, as well
as over thirty unique workshops to choose from. For registration

to apply for Fall 2004, you will need to attend this information session in
order to pick up your application to the Junior Honors Medical Program.
Please remember to request a copy of your transcripts soon after the Fall
semester has ended and be sure the official transcripts are in a sealed
envelope from the Registrar's Office. Hold on to the sealed transcripts
until you are ready to submit them with the JHMP application. If you are not
yet eligible to apply, it would still be useful to go to the session to find
out about the program and the process.

12. HEARTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS: It's that time of year!  Through Dec. 10,
Friends for Life of America will be doing "Hearts for the Holidays," a
program that sends holiday cards all over the country to children with
cancer. Last year over 10,000 children received cards, this year the goal is
to send cards to hospitals in every
state. Tables will be in Turlington and the Reitz Union Colonnade, so come
out and make a card!

14. CLOSING EVENT FOR UF's 150th CELEBRATION:The UF Sesquicentennial
Committee invites everyone to attend the following closing birthday event in
December. On Wednesday, December 10, the university will hold a UF birthday
bash at the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom from 12-2 pm. There will be free box
lunches for the first 700 people, and the ceremony will include guest
speakers, a performance by the University Gospel Choir, the screening of the
new UF history film, Dream Machine, and plenty of birthday cake for

15. AUDITION FOR "LUCKY STIFF"The University of Florida's university-wide
spring musical "Lucky Stiff" will be holding auditions Tuesday, January 6
from 4-6 PM in the Stadium Blackbox Theatre (STA236).  Bring a 1-minute
monologue and a 16 bar long song selection, as well as a headshot and/or
resume of any theatrical experience.  "Lucky Stiff" is a hilarious farce
musical comedy about a man who must accompany his deceased uncle on a trip
to Monte Carlo in order to receive an inheritance of $6 million, and all of
the mayhem that ensues.  Callback auditions will be on Wednesday from 6-10

16. BEINECKE SCHOLARSHIP for graduate study in arts, humanities, and social
sciences (college juniors): The University of Florida has been invited to
participate in the very prestigious Beinecke Scholarship Competition. Each
year 100 colleges and universities are asked to nominate one student, and 22
Scholarships of $32,000 each are awarded. ($2000 for the senior year; the
rest is for graduate school). The scholarship is awarded on merit (not need)
and is highly competitive. To be nominated, students must have demonstrated
superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement and
personal promise during their undergraduate career. Students must be a
college junior who expects to graduate between December 2004 and August
2005, and plans to enter a master's or doctoral program in the arts,
humanities or social sciences. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and have a
documented history of receiving NEED-BASED financial aid during their
undergraduate years. The application consists of a short application form, a
current resume, three faculty letters, a personal statement of 1000 words
describing the candidate's career aspiration, a transcript, and more.
Finally, the application also includes a certification of eligibility and a
Financial Data Sheet certifying that the student qualifies for need-based
financial aid. The UF deadline is February 20, 2004 to 140 Tigert Hall, and
students who are planning to seek the UF nomination should e-mail Jeanna

Program students at UF: As the spring term starts, I wanted to encourage all
students in the Honors Program to get involved in undergraduate research and
here are several options to consider:
First, consider signing up for research for credit at UF. You commit to
spend an agreed-on number of hours each week for one semester helping out in
one of the many research groups on campus. What you get is course credit
through IDH4905 or IDH4917 (or through a course number within the individual
department) direct interaction with a professor and graduate students, and
some very valuable experience to help you best compete for the other
programs below. You also get a chance to observe what graduate students and
faculty in these departments actually do and often a better sense of whether
this would be a good choice for you. Many undergraduates find that working
in, for instance, a lab full of chemistry graduate students helps them get
the help they need to easily excel in their chemistry classes. Remember that
one of the great things about UF compared to virtually all small private
colleges in the US is that our research facilities are WORLD CLASS; take
advantage of this! Several semesters of "A" grades in such undergraduate
research courses look great on a transcript no matter what your future plans
are. To learn more, stop by the Honors Office, or simply arrange an
appointment with your favorite professor and ask about research for credit.

Second, the University Scholars Program is a great means of obtaining a
$2,500 award to do a research project at UF over the summer. More

Third, UF is very fortunate to have 7 National Science Foundation-sponsored
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Sites on our campus. These
highly prestigious programs recruit students from UF, across the US and some
international students for high-level undergraduate research projects over a
summer, typically after the junior year. Students generally receive $3,000
or more plus housing for the summer and live with other undergraduates from
different colleges and universities around the US. The REU Sites are:

The US/France Site, recently extended by NSF for an additional 4 years sends
students to some of the best research laboratories in France (Paris,
Strasbourg, Bordeaux, and more) for projects in the area of chemistry and
related areas. French language skills are not required, but premedical and
pre-professional students are not encouraged to apply. Note that a Rhodes
Scholar was recently named from one of the participants in this program so
it is really top notch!!

The Whitney Marine Laboratory near Saint Augustine has REU projects in the
area of Biochemistry/Marine Biology.

The Chemistry Department at UF has projects in all areas of chemistry,
materials chemistry, and biochemistry. Students in Chemistry live with a
group of French undergraduates who come to do research at UF each summer.
Premedical and pre-professional students are not encouraged to apply.

The Physics Department at UF has projects in all areas of physics.

The Psychology Department at UF has projects in Psychobiology.

The Engineering Research Center at UF has projects in Particle Science.

The Electrical Engineering Department has projects in Robotics/Machine

Finally, the National Science Foundation sponsors hundreds of other REU
Sites in many science disciplines all across the USA. Most UF undergraduates
are eligible to apply at these sites after their sophomore or junior year
(and research for credit or one of the other programs above helps
